The unemployment rate (red line) fell to its lowest level since January 2009, when President Barack Obama took office.
UPDATED 9:50 a.m. EDT: The nation's unemployment rate dropped to the lowest it has been in almost four years in September, giving President Barack Obama a potential upbeat talking point as the presidential race heads into the final innings.
The Labor Department reported Friday that the unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent in September, a decline of 0.3 percentage point and the lowest since January 2009. The government said the economy created 114,000 jobs, about as expected, and generated 86,000 more jobs in July and August than first estimated.
A survey of households from which the jobless rate is derived showed 873,000 job gains last month, the most since June 1983. The drop in unemployment came even as Americans come back into the labor force to resume the hunt for work. The workforce had shrunk in the prior two months. The household survey is volatile, however.
It was the second last report before the November 6 election that pits Obama against Republican Mitt Romney.
Unemployment rate drop could have an impact on the campaign
"It's a little confusing, to be honest with you. The number of jobs created wasn't that high but the unemployment rate came down and the participation rate went up a little bit, so it's confusing. All in all, it doesn't change the trajectory of what the jobs environment has been really for the last year," said Ron Florance, managing director for investment strategy for Wells Fargo Private Bank.
The two numbers – the unemployment rate and the non-farm payrolls number – come from two separate reports done by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The unemployment report is based on the so-called Household Survey and it measures the number of unemployed as a percentage of the labor force. It is notoriously volatile and economists don’t put much stock in it, even though it often becomes the talking point for non-economists, politicians and pundits. It includes the unemployed who are out there actively seeking work and it excludes people who have left the work force and are not applying for jobs.
The non-farm payrolls number comes from the establishment survey and is considered more accurate.
“The rule of thumb when the two surveys tell different stories is to go with what the establishment survey says. However, the household survey provides reasons to be somewhat more optimistic about job opportunities for American workers,” said Heidi Shierholz, an economist for the liberal-leaning Economic Policy Institute.
'Discouraged' workers face tough road back to employment
A Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Thursday after Wednesday's first presidential debate showed Romney gained ground and is now viewed positively by 51 percent of voters. Obama's favorability rating remained unchanged at 56 percent.
Economists blame the so-called fiscal cliff for the slowdown in business hiring, which has left millions of Americans working either part-time or unemployed and too discouraged to look for jobs.
The Congressional Budget Office has warned that a failure by Congress to avoid the automatic tax hikes and government spending cuts that will suck about $600 billion out of the economy next year would knock the economy back into recession.
"Businesses are not hiring people, they want to wait and see how the election evolves and how the political landscape shapes up," said Sung Won Sohn, an economics professor at California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo, California.
"Everyone has kind of battened down the hatches," Sohn said before the release of the report.
Persistently poor labor market conditions led the Federal Reserve in September to announce a plan to buy $40 billion worth of mortgage-backed securities each month until it sees a sustained turnaround in employment.
The central bank, which also pledged to keep overnight lending rates near zero until at least mid-2015, hopes the purchases drive down long-term borrowing costs and spur the recovery.
The Fed's ultra-easy stance has started to free up credit, giving a lift to consumers, economists said. That, in turn, helped lift retail hiring in September.
Temporary help jobs, which are often seen as a harbinger for permanent hiring, fell 2,000 after being almost flat in August.
Manufacturing payrolls fell for a second straight month.
Construction employment rose 5,000, benefiting from the rise in home construction, as demand for housing rises against the backdrop of record low mortgage rates
Government payrolls rose 10,000 after increasing 45,000 in August. Average hourly earnings rose 7 cents last month, which could support spending.
Reuters contributed to this report.
The Morning Joe panel continues their discussion about the latest jobs report and argue about whether it's accurate. They also consider a tweet from fmr. GE CEO Jack Welch about the jobs numbers. MSNBCs's Joe Scarborough comments saying, "these numbers just don't add up."

Less people looking for jobs does not equal lower unemployment, this tactic has to stop for both sides. 114,000 isn't even enough to cover work force entry. Just means more people giving up looking in a bad economy.
Let's start reporting REAL unemployment, you know, the rate over 15%.
The Obama boom is here: 4 more years.
...........
Thanks, Mr. President.
............
Obama has achieved this without help from Republicans in Congress who are supposed to help the country to move forward. But Speaker Boner and his Senate gangs have violated the 'social contract' and tried destroy the country as long as they can get rid of the President.
But the President has achieved good economic progress....
4 more years..
FORWARD....
Even Joe Scarborough is saying the numbers DON'T ADD UP. No way with the job creation as low as it is that the Unemployment rate went down to 7.8%. Jack Welch just tweeted: Unbelievable job numbers...these Chicago guys will do anything...can't debate so change numbers.
Wow - are the American people being treated like mushrooms or what? Kept in the dark and fed sh%t.
Increase is an increase and Obama has increased jobs for the last 3 years running. Sorry but them pesky facts just keep screwing you Republitards. You need some K-Y? :D
Just imagine what it could be now if we had a Congress that cared about the American publc.
KnowNukes, this won't stop obama from patting himself on the back. He's still the worst at creating real jobs!
Something is better than nothing, it took years to dig this hole, its surely not going to recovery as fast as we would like, but we are headed in the right direction, and just suppose you are one of the 114.000 who found a job. I can imagine the joy they must fell this morning.
"REAL unemployment"? Do you mean U6, which has been under 15% for a couple of months now? Also, did you note that at the end of the article it mentioned that the unemployment rate dropped this month DESPITE an increase in the number of people reentering the job market by looking for work?
Thank you Know!! I've been screaming this for years. New unemployment filing reports provide zero comfort to those that have been out for months or more.
Anyone who cites Joe Scarborough as a creditable source needs to check facts first. And please retake some math classes!
The drop came because of the upward revision of the jobs numbers in Q4 and Q1 (2011 and 2012) of 386,000 that was announce by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics on Sept 27. In addition, there was the addition of 40,000 jobs to the July report and 46,000 jobs to the August report. So it wasn't just the 114,000 jobs that led to the drop of 0.3% in the unemployment number. It was the addition of 586,000 jobs after corrections.
Oh poor Chris, can't actually find anything wrong so denial of reality is his only hope. *sniff*
Oh, good news on the US economy... I can already hear the wailing of the republicans...
If this is what you call the 'Obama boom" I want no part of it. NOBAMA send him back to Chicago. Millions have simply exhausted their time on unemployment.
Drops a drop chumps. If it was an increase you all would be masturbating over it like monkeys in a cage. :)
Like we are now. :D lolzzzzz
TexasT - Baby boomers are retiring. Come January, it will be 10,000 a day. Even if it is only 8000 a day now, that would be 240,000 retired plus 114,000. That is 354,000 jobs if the retirements were covered. Regardless, the unemployed went down 354,000. I wish Republican would learn how to add and subtract. Once you take that remedial math class, start working on Romney's tax plan. He needs a lot of help making those numbers work.
a punch in Romney's gut...if Mitt has one.
Another spin from the DOL to help Obama. All the numbers changes after 2 weeks , DOL come up with adjusted numbers, all the time higher than the first report. Remember GDP wen down from 1,7 % to 1,2%. The corrected numbers appear in the last page of the papers, in small print.
Obama lie machine.
Keep it coming!!! I am sure Rush will have figured this conspiracy out by noon.
Obama/Biden 2012
Lies just pure lies. These people just cant do the math. Lets see. 347,000 new people are applying for unemployment every WEEK!! and this has happened since 2008. Hmmmmm.... OK now....thats 1.5 mil each MONTH!! that are new umemployed. K..and they are talking about 100,000 new hires. Geee am I just crazy or is there math a little weak. Ill let you decide. The 7.8 number real?? No way. Pure media lies.
Obama manufactured numbers? The RWNJ won't stop at anything. 7.8%? good job Mr President but still more work to be done. 114,000 + 86,000 (adjusted from july and august). 7.8% is possible and plausible. The RWNJ's are stunned.
Obama/Biden 2012
It is the household survey that is showing 800,000 plus jobs created last month. That is where the 7.8 percent unemployment number comes from, not the bls number of 114,000. The household survey asks people if they are working now. So apparently 800,000 people replied they are now working even though the BLS says that only 114,000 people actually got jobs. The household number was always the number they SAY they have used. True more people are dropping out according to the bls numbers, but not according to this other method.
Ooo The Unemployment Rate "Dropped" ?
Well..look again.
The employment participation rate only went up .1% (that's 1/10 of percent)
.... 63.5% to 63.6%
Hardly anything...
http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS11300000/
So, don't get giddy on me...
Someone failed High School math and Someone Drank to Much of the Obama Kool-AID, gee I wonder what next Months are going to look like, are we going to be at 5% next month, The real number should be around 12%, So to all you Liberals, We dont believe these numbers, This Number has Been changed, but hey if you want to believe that obama and axelrod had nothing to do with it and live your lives in some kind of dream go ahead, but if you really think that this is real, get a life. and for the record 7.8% which is not the real number is still horrible, so i woudnt go around patting obama on the back, NO PRESIDENT IN THE HISTORY OF THE USA HAS HAD THAT BAD OF NUMBER THAN OBAMA
Jeff, read a bit more closely. I was agreeing with your position.
Joe Scarborough is a rank and file republican. He also said he wasn't qualified to interpret the numbers. The economy is steadily improving and let's remember, the republicans have obstructed each step of the way. Their ONLY agenda is to make sure America fails so they can take back the helm and put us under once and for all. Won't happen.
Suxs being you huh tirthIS-SAD? :D
The sheeple are quick to support the current Blunderer-in-Chief! But the people who do work, and the people who are looking for work know the truth....Obama sucks!
But believe what you want little Jeff, ignoring the truth is just denial!
Propoganda, pure and simple. Factor in those who have given up finding jobs, those who are underemployed and those who once had one nice paying job but or now doing two or three lower-paying jobs to make ends meet....this is total fabrication.
I hate to burst the GOP's bubble but even FOX news; the infamous right-wing station also confirms that the US unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent. What do you say to that? FOX has now gone liberal?
LOL oh looky the Republitards are already collapsing the truth like they can hide from it. Bahahahahahhaha! :D
Buk, buk, buk, buk, chickens. :D
Uh oh, this is good news.. and doesn't support the GOP DOOM and GLOOM....approach.
This is a start... we still have a long way to go, but improvement on unemployment is always good!
Robert D Clarkson,
"We dont believe these numbers"
No, you wouldn't believe them unless they were reported under an incumbent Republican president who was running for office. Then I'm sure you would have no trouble believing them.
You'd figure the American public would be sick of their lies by now but apparently those who are not the 47% are loving lies. :)
I can hear it already! What excuse will the republicans have for this? It is because so many left the job market? It is a mistake? They are low paying jobs? It is working so FORWARD we go!
Obama? Biden 2012
do the Math, oh wait you cant do the math, for the number to go down you must have higher numbers, you can not have a lower number each much. if your so blind to not see the truth then so be it. I would love to see the number go way down but you can not wish it to happen, and this economy doesnt have the strength to do it. so keep drinkin the kool-aid.
You want a game changer? 7.8% is it. WOW.........Joe ScareBorough/RWNJs believe it. It's 7.8%.
redvirginia, yes, the number will be revised next month. No, it won't necessarily revise unemployment up or employment down. How do I know? Because this month's report revised employment numbers from the previous month UPWARDS.
Marcus, it is simple math. 1.614 million new gross jobs created minus 1.5 million new people unemployed equals .114 million (114,000) new net jobs this month.
Fox is a news channel , their job is publish the numbers from official sources without questioning. However you will see comments from FOX business , they do not agree with the spin Obama machine, Obama's arithmetic.
Jeff-1592116
I think you're right. Romney tells 27 lies in 38 minutes. ;-). Oh and Now I was completely wrong about the 47%? I think Gingrich, Santorum, Guliani, and McCain were right about R$mney... He will say and do anything to become President.
Bill,
Where were you when bushwhacker was losing 750,000 jobs a month?
If those who really believes these numbers I have a bridge in NYC for sale.
The pres and "unbiased" nbc news just reach a new low.
No thanks to republicans.
GObama!
I don't believe this for a minute.....
Labor Secretary Hilda Solice's job depends on Obama
re-election.....buried in the report is this :
"The change in total
nonfarm payroll employment for July was revised from
+141,000 to +181,000, and the change for August was revised
from +96,000 to +142,000."
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm
A change this big never
happens....+ 86,000 Job ERROR ??????.....and with no explanation given.....What
a croc !!!
Nobody panic,
As usual this number will be revised upward next week. Keep your eyes open
FreeMarket. Your comment is LAME. Yes most of us support our President and wonder how the hell you can make a comment againt our President when it is your Republican Congress that has screwed this country repeatedly. The numbers would of been better but inspite of their obstructionism this economy is still trying to recover after the devastation of the GWB.
Fox is the right wing mouth piece for the teabuggers and the neo-Nazi like extremists on the right! "Unfair and Unbalanced!"
The U3 (the number that is usually reported) has been measured this way for a few decades now. If you don't like the measurement, then blame whomever decided a few decades ago that the U3 would be measured in this manner.
Itsabouttime: so if odumbo gets reelected does this mean I can some obama $$ with my obama phone too?
Oh happy days are here again!
There is no way you can add 114,000 jobs and the rate drops from 8.1 to 7.8 ...
it just does not add up... must be fuzzy math!!
I wonder how many people quit looking for work??
I wish these were REAL numbers, but they just don't add up!!
I think early next year no matter who wins the election we will get the truth on the job numbers and it's not going to be pretty!!
There goes the fleeting momentum for Rob-me!!
Wrong about America. Wrong FOR America. Send Wrongme back to Bain so he can harvest more companies for profit.
I find it amusing, Republicans cum all over themselves thinking Romney won the debate, and he did until the fact checkers nailed him. Lies from beginning to end. Now they are rooting against the job numbers because it threatens them some way. I sure wish the republicans would just STFU and leave.
The Labor Dept. says..... and who is the Labor Dept.'s boss? Amazing how we can be over 8% for almost 4 years and then as if it were
made upmagic it drops just after the first debate and 1 month before the election. Talk about coincidence!B I N G O, B I N G O, B I N G O and Bingo was his name-o. :)
how do you know that this number is real? easy, if you look at the ADP report (ADP is the biggest payroll service in the country), their employment numbers has consistently been higher than the Government number every month.
The Government does a survey for the month employment, and then revised them when all the paper work is completed. Wall street follow the ADP report, which comes one day before the Government number as an indicator.
If you do not know where this number comes from, do not comment !!!!
How can the unemployment rate drop this much with so few jobs added?
114,000 is the attendance of a Super Bowl show.
drop of 3 points add114000 jobs. numbers do not work! i may have sucked at math but this just doesnt add up!
@motheof: When it was Jr's Dept of Labor you didn't have any problems with the SAME method of testing the unemployment? Now Obama "The Dictator" says to the Sec of Labor change the numbers and NOBODY will re check the numbers and the stats???? Isn't too much "conspiracy TV" lately????
@ john;
Just like so many liberals you can't stand having someone with a differing opinion. No doubt you'd like the republicans to leave so you'd not be held accountable for your own skewed opinions.
I think most Americans that watched the debate were shocked to see the commander in chief unable to command even himself - unprepared, uncomfortable, clueless. No doubt it unsettled even the liberals able to be honest with themselves and make them wonder how this guy got into the oval office.
I find it ironic that sooo many liberal posts here are crowing and doing their little happy dance about what a lower unemployment rate does for their candidate - an virtually nobody seeming to care how this affects actual people that need jobs - exactly what you've been skewering Romney for over the 47% comment.
The GOP is upset because the R&R boys can't use the 8% number anymore. Kept spewing the good is bad and bad is good crap. It goes so well with the R&R lies.
How's it make you feel that Romney 'won' the debate by going anti-conservative all over you? Desperate times for the R&R boys called for desperate measures and Mitt delivered by going rogue on the GOP. The TPers must be going nuts, 'I'm so confused!'.
PS - auto and home sales are up too. Oh the humanity of it all!
I wonder where we'd be today if the GOP obstructionists weren't in constant sabotage mode?
Look closer at the numbers.
The Labor force *grew* 422,000 people, 456,000 less people were looking for jobs, and employment grew *+873,000*
The reason it dropped is because more people simply found jobs that are available, that's what +873,000 more employed people in a month will do, they aren't looking because they found jobs. At the same time more people were coming into the labor force.
Anderson post 1.45 said: againt our President when it is your Republican Congress that has screwed this country repeatedly. The numbers would of been better but inspite of their obstructionism this economy is still trying to recover after the devastation of the GWB.
So the Democratic Congress is what screwed Bush repeatedly, and you are still trying to blame him?! What a hypocrite!
It seems most of the these jobs were part-time jobs. You can't support a family on a part-time job.
Good paying jobs need to be created, not low paying jobs.
Yes. It does. Number of jobs created does not always correlate to the unemployment rate. They, in fact, are calculated by two seperate surveys and methods.
Look at the report.
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/empsit.pdf
The number of employed people went from 142.101 million to 142.974 million.
The unemployment rate dropped because a bunch more people started working during the month. They found jobs. That means they are no longer looking for work. Which means the unemployment rate will drop.
It was +873,000 more employed people for the month. The biggest gain in 30 years.
You want to know why the drop to 7.8%? Look at the revisions of past employment numbers now that better data has come in. Not only was there an increase of 114,000 net jobs in September, not only was there an revised upward amount of 86,000 jobs for July and August, there was also a revised upward amount of 300,000+ jobs for the 2011 Q4 and 2012 Q1. In fact, the upward revisions bring the Labor Department's numbers closer to what private payroll firm ADP has said the employment numbers have been for the last year. In other words, we are talking around a 500,000 job increase with revisions in employment that also happens to be inline with what a private company was saying about employment all along (that it was going up faster than what the government was reporting). 500,000>450,000 needed to get the unemployment rate down to 7.8%.
HEY!!!
Where are ALL THOSE PROMISED JOBS FROM THE JOB CREATORS that got all of those BIG TAX BREAKS for soooooooooooo many years...HUH?
Guess they are waiting for their poster boy MITTENS to get in the White House and then ALL HELL WILL BREAK LOOSE!!! NO REGULATION, NO TAXES, OFF SHORE ACCOUNTS, NO MIMIMUM WAGE, NO BENEFITS, NO HEALTH CARE (except for the CEO's of course) WHOOPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!
Please read it again, 114K new jobs in Sept + upward revisions in July and August Numbers. more than 200 K total.
And unemployment will keep going down, because when a survey of households (from which the jobless rate is derived) showed 873,000 job gains last month, the most since June 1983.
This means that Obama so far has created a net of 1 million jobs( despite all the loses when he became president), 1 million more than what Bush Created in 8 Years.
Does anyone actually read the report? Or do you all just start making stuff up?
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/empsit.pdf
Page 20 of 38.
The number of full time workers increased from 114.388 to 115.266 million. +838,000.
The number of part time workers *decreased* from 27.757 million to 27.731 million.
MSNBC needs to come out of the closet and just admit it.... they are as left as Fox is right. It's become a joke, even CNN is talking about it. Don't be bashful, embrace it and people might respect you more.
I might have been born at night, but it wasn't last night.
yep, yet another strategy. if you can't dazzle 'em with dancework, baffle 'em with bulls$%t.
And look how the obamites all fall in line. "Now that Obama has done this without republican support, imagine what he could do with a democratic congress" one says. He could live large and keep going on vacation off my tax dollars?
And real jobs? Where? Walmart? Burger King? Ok, while this next article is a bit skewed and I rarely pay it mind when it comes to having an unbiased view....
In that article, the writer does make a clear point when it comes to things. How many workers are back to work because they took a part-time job just to help them get by. While I do believe Mitt has his head in his four point contact about people just sitting around and living off the system, I don't believe that we are getting all the facts in the case of this unemployment rate. The jobs rate grows at it's slowest rate in four years last month, and this month it shoots up? It's called Seasonal Employment kids. WalMart, Sears, and other companies always begin hiring extra help this time of year to help with the Christmas season.
Oh, by the way...he makes a staggering prediction at the end of the article that the unemployment rate would be below 8% by around this time this year if Obama thinks to have a chance at reelection.
So basically kids, EVERYONE witnessed the stomping he took at the debate. Everyone. You can make all the excuses in the world for him, but he is the President of the United States. And yet, while he talked plans and where we should be heading, he had no strength in his arguments. He kept going on and on about this Five Billion Dollars that Mitt was loosing in taxes and Two Billion Dollars for Military Spending. What was that? I don't see where you are cutting out Five Billion Dollars if you take the 15% I pay in and lower it to 12% while lowering my deduction from $3500 to $2500. I actually pay a little more at the end of the year, but my paycheck suffers a little less. There's your math Mr. President.
So everyone on here who is spewing that thumbs up to the President, while downing the hopeful...
It's just math. I can jumble numbers on a piece of paper, and if I do it long enough I can eventually get the answer I want. Move this from here to there, jumble where this number came from. There, I get what they want to see. When you call someone's house and ask "Are you working?", you're not asking "did you take a Temp job because you are out of unemployment benefits and your home is in jeopardy? Kids hungry? Lights on or off? So burdened by loans from the last four years you were out of work that you can't see the light of day?" You don't ask that. You just ask "Are you working now?" And you really don't ask the question "Will you be unemployed again when January 2013 comes?", because that would just be plain mean. Have a nice day
OBAMA the COMMIE pulls this stuff out of his tamale hole and throws it at the American public.
This is an abysmal report (and I am sure there will be attempts to spin it to the contrary). The fact is that the economy requires the addition of appx. 150,000 jobs per month just to keep up with population growth/immigration/new entrants into the job market. Therefore, 114,000 is a NET loser!
During the Clinton Administration, we added hundreds of thousands more each month than this! The drop to 7.8% is ONLY because the number eliminates anyone out of work for more than one year and those that have dropped out of the workforce (AND THAT NUMBER IS HUGE). Real unemployment is over 15%!
Oooooh, somebody in the Dept. of Labor is going to get a great big bonus today! What an effort to come up with these bulls**t numbers a month before the election.
For you libs who actaully believe this bs, I'm almost embarassed for your clulessness.
This line is from the article below. Proves that government is getting bigger. Obama's plan is working, which is to make the USA a government controlled country.
What good is it to have a monthly report when you revise numbers from three months ago? How do we know these revised numbers are correct?
http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/10/05/us-usa-economy-idUSBRE8930PZ20121005
Oh ROFL, those numbers are skewed and remember, businesses are hiring PART-TIME work for the Christmas season. Obama NEEDS to look better and the Dept of Labor are filled with his people.
Incorrect.
Due to our aging popualtion (retirees) and slowing population growth and slowing immigration, the economy only needs to create 110-120k jobs a month (and that would be with a 66% participation rate, it's 63.6% now).
And we've created an average of 200k jobs for the last 24months. 2 years.
Actually, during the last 2 years has been one of the largest periods of job creation of any stretch in the last 25 years. Including the Clinton Administration.
That number is not that huge. You can actually look here.
http://www.bls.gov/webapps/legacy/cpsatab16.htm
It captures people who are discourage and quit looking. It's around a few million people. While it's more than recent years, the number has been high before, during the 1980s, and during the early 90s as well.
Unemployment dropped so much because +873,000 more people were indicated as employed in the household survey. Which means they aren't looking for work.
If you counted the outside the labor force population increase that's abnormal, you'd find U3 might be around 10% if those people felt they were able to find jobs and returned to the labor force to look for work. But then again, you'd have to revise the last 30 years too. Outside labor force population growth has been above US population growth for the last 30 years.
Axelrod & Oworthless can put out all the numbers they wish. It will not make up for Oworthless getting slammed and KO'd in the debate. Oworthless rambling and stuttering because he is absolutely clueless on economics and business speaks volumes. It was like a grown man talking to a little boy. The little boy we can't afford to have in the Peoples House another 4 years. Obama will get knocked out again in next debate. Bye Bye Oworthless! Your days ARE numbered!
What a load of sh*t from the Obama Administration. Barak did so poorly in the debates that he has to make his lies bigger and bigger eveeryday. He can lie to his idiots Obots, he can manipulate unemployment numbers for the Main Stream Media, but he can't lie to the actual Americans that are going to vote in November.
Wow sure are a lot of people who's glass is half empty ..... jobs were created rejoice .... or I guess you would rather have it go the other way.
Nicey (#1.78) President Clinton created 22 Million new jobs during both terms. Your numbers are off--- the FACT is that currently, we ARE NOT even keeping pace with population growth (which has slowed--- but even still, we aren't keeping up).
We permit 1 Million LEGAL immigrants into our country every year (in addition to the ILLEGALS who come here). Meanwhile, hardworking Americans (particularly blue collar workers) are being devastated by the inability to: (1) find a job, (2) find a job that pays a living wage and benefits!
Again, one can make numbers say what they want them to say. These numbers do not reflect what is happening in the REAL world. I for one, is not buying it. People have given up looking for jobs. There are none.
How convenient after Mr. Obama's listless and ineffective debate. He showed in that debate what many have known for the last 4 years. He is incapable and unqualified.
Boy OH boy, Obama really cooked the books on this one. I'll give Obama credit for one thing, very creative accounting.
Just like Republican right-wingers to dispute numbers used for decades and believe a Republican presidential candidate like Romney who will say anything but can't back up a single statement.
You'll never get a right-winger to tell the truth. They have no morals.
Romney is the scariest Presidential nominee we've ever had who will do anything, tell anything, flip-flop with anything to become the President his father never could. Freud would have a field day with Romney and any of the Bush brothers.
Romney is the biggest basket-case out there, and that's saying a lot considering they have a sorry group of Palin, Bachman, Gingrich, Perry, Santorum, and, another Bush, all waiting in the wings.
Gotta love all the armchair economists and their "I don't understand the math behind any of it, so it must be wrong because it fits my narrative!" pseudo-logic.
Hey, geniuses! Here are a few ACTUAL FACTS for you to consider: 1) DoL, despite the opinions of the uninformed, does NOT exist to facilitate or thwart any candidate in an election -- their job is to report on labor statistics based on the data they have available and THAT'S IT; 2) Said data is regularly revised up or down even several weeks AFTER the initial report as more complete data becomes available; 3) The methods/metrics used are the same as they have ever been for many years now, meaning that the current data is being measured using the same stick now as it was under GWB, Clinton, Bush senior, etc. (so you tell me how that's "unfair").
Still don't believe the numbers? Fine, then go take a seat over there with the 9/11 "inside job" conspiracists, the "moon landing was a hoax" crowd, the birthers, the "Elvis lives" idiots, and "ghost hunter" psychics. You can rejoin the rest of us at the adult table when you learn to stop running to look up the word "gullible" every time someone says it isn't in the dictionary.
Well, I can already guess how much your opinion is going to count.
It's like this, Anderson,
It is easy to say it is GWBush who did all the damage to the economy. Obama keeps citing two unfunded wars as the reason. These wars were approved by congress, yes, that includes Democrats. Both wars cost less than $1 trillion. Obama has increased the deficit by $ 5 trillion. That does not include what was already on the books, that is in addtion to. The economy collapsed mostly due to the housing crisis, and the Democrats are as responsible for most of that. Bush warned your democrats about this upcoming debacle, but your friend Barney Frank, said that everything was fine, because he was in charge. So, if you want to blame Bush for the economic collapse, this is a free country, the only thing is it isn't true. If you cant find any responsibility on the democrat side, you are a fool.
Another month of positive job growth and the stinking conservatives try to minimize the recovery. Boo to you that cheer against America for your stinking political gain and your march in reverse to the very policy's that put us here. One thing for sure reducing taxes on the wealthy did not create even one of these jobs.
Tony_Baloney, since you seem to know everything, (in your opinion) how about telling us when this method of calculating unemployment began? And while you're at it, let us know what branch of the government the DoL falls under. If you made your boss look bad, and jeapordized his job, how long would you have yours? Your post makes you sound like an arrogant, condescending blowhard!
Actually, it will.
Economic conditions, direction, sentiment will have a much larger impact than any debate. As data points to *the fact* that debates do little to change the poll direction over time.
Mitt - pack your bags and retire in Cayman islands. The economy is slowly but surely improving.
Nicey-1026620, keep believing, just keep believing!
Nicey-1026620
you are outright wrong:
- the unemployment rate is a survey that takes the number of people actively seeking employment vs the number of people employed and calculates the net unemployment rate
- if the rate goes down, it means people are no longer looking for a job, not that they found work
- there are a bunch of reasons for people to stop looking for jobs: gave up looking, went on welfare, went back to school, left the country, became a criminal, became homeless, medical disability
we need to generate roughly 175,000 jobs per month to keep up with immigration, people exiting school and looking for work etc. and we aren't doing it.... there's a big debate on who is to blame for that of course, but twisting this release to make it look like tons of people got back to work is just that: twisting the reality
reality is, many people are under or not employed, and this month we fell 61,000 jobs short (175-114) of keeping our head above water.
there is a huge overhang of people, by most accounts about another 8%, that need jobs to get off of assistance, or to replace BS part time work they have, etc.
our economy is in the crapper... and the unemployment number has always been a sunshine blowing number to make the government look better than it is....
people not having enough work is not entirely any one person's fault... but the blame does largely belong to our elected officials, who are not doing their jobs......
Arrogant, am I, OldDog57? Ehhhh, maybe a little... but I think it's really more just the frustration of suffering fools creeping out.
Condescending? Absolutely, but only toward people who are so blinded by their own preconceived notions (whether their own or someone else's that's been spoon-fed to them that they were willing to swallow) that they adamantly REFUSE to use their heads for anything more than a hat rack when confronted with FACTS that challenges their worldview.
Blowhard? Not hardly. I back up my statements and I don't spout lies and theories as if they're immutable truths.
If you're someone who uses your brain, thinks outside the box, sifts for truth, and is willing to question your own conclusions when presented with evidence to the contrary, then you've no reason to be offended because my commentary isn't directed at you.
If, on the other hand, you're someone who is close-minded, myopic, prejudiced, bigoted, incapable of empathy, can't admit when you're wrong even when you know it, or are just plain stupid, and you can't break yourself out of whatever mold you've cast yourself in, then by all means be offended that I'm talking down to you (for all the good it will do you). When you get over being mad for being called out, then try bettering yourself by expanding your horizons and worldview, because we ALL benefit from any improvement in the quantity/quality of our critical thinkers.
I never claimed to "know everything" but I'll answer your questions. I'd rather you present some kind of counter-argument if you disagree with me rather than just sit there and say, "Oh, yeah? Prove it!" which any kid can do, but hey, I'll take whatever opportunity I can to educate people.
The current metrics have been in use for the past 18 years (OK, so not QUITE back to Bush senior, but even then you can still measure accurately further back than that by comparing the U3 figures over that period to the U5 figures pre-1994 because that measure HASN'T changed and you still get an apples-to-apples comparison). The bottom line is the yardstick hasn't changes in almost 2 decades, therefore the numbers being put out today are just as reliable a gauge as they were 5 years ago, or 10 years, or 15 years ago, so sneering down one's nose and saying, "Oh, well NOW they're just cooking the books/making stuff up," is just lying to oneself to appease one's own preconceived notions at this point. Don't agree? Then dig up some facts that support your position and prove me wrong.
Anyone with access to even a half-decent search engine can read that the DoL is part of the POTUS' cabinet, but only a blind fool automatically assumes that means anything and everything they say is suspect, biased, fabricated, and never fact-checked or vetted by any processes extant since before the current administration. The BLS has it's numbers reviewed by the OMB and there are qualitative standards to ensure the integrity of the data presented that must be met before anything can be published publicly.
If, at this point of the post, you're sitting there thinking to yourself anything along the lines of "Well, sure, one group of liars cooks up the numbers and another group of liars swears to their veracity," then gimme some proof of that. I'm more than happy to discuss our conflicting viewpoints if you're willing to use FACTS. If you are unable or unwilling to do that, then please don't waste my time.
I find it both sad and disgusting at the glee the Republicans get trying to make America worse. There have been 2 great depressions/recessions in modern American history and both of them have come with Republicans in power. And in both of them America only recovered after a Democratic Administration came to power.Since that is historical fact that can't be spun by the Republicans. You'd think they would get the message.Returning to the failed policies of tax cuts for the wealthy and "trickle" down economics will only bring on another disaster, when we are just getting out of the last one their failed policies gave us.No amount of spin from a snake oil salesman like Romney can beat historical fact. The Republican base may buy their bs. But like one of their own Senators admitted about them "we will never be the party of the smart people".
Obama/Biden for America's sake.
No it's not.
It's the number of people seeking work (as defined by the survey) divided by the number of people in the labor force.
12.088 million people were seeking employment, the labor force is 155.063 million, 12.088/155.063 = 0.7795 or 7.8%.
In strict terms yes, however, it certainly doesn't mean they left the work force either.
And the numbers from this month bear that out.
If they had become discouraged or marginally attached, that's where they would have gone. U4 and U5 were unchanged, so 456,000 people stopped looking for work, but didn't end up in U4 or U5. So where did they go?
Outside the labor force? Nope. They wouldn't be discounted from U4 or U5 yet, you have to have been not looking for 12 months to fall outside U4/U5.
It's called deductive reasoning. +873,000 people employed for the month, Labor force grew +418,000, the number of people looking for jobs decreased (despite a bunch of people coming into the labor force thus increasing the size).
The rest of the data provides context.
Incorrect. Do the math for yourself. Take a look at say the last 5 years. The # of people that are non-institutional population (those that can work) and use a 66% participation rate. That number comes out to needing to create around 130k jobs.
And it would be less than that because we have an *aging* society. Meaning more people thru simple demographics will be exiting the workforce than entering. In particular, population growth has been slowing in the US for sometime, and immigration slowed a lot from the 2008 recession.
So in reality, you need something like 110-120k to keep up. We've been creating an average near 200k per month for 2 years.
Looks like you want to twist reality because the data doesn't support the conclusion of people leaving the labor force. Just the opposite. The labor force grew, the number of employed grew by a lot, and the number of people looking dropped. Which points to people finding jobs.
Jobs and unemployment don't correlate 1 to 1 on a monthly basis. Over time, a certain number of jobs need to be created. But in any given month, jobs may simply be filled.
A filled job, would not be counted as a created job.
The unemployment rate comes from survey based on the CPS, Job Creation comes from another sample population and model alltogether.
Therefor, in any given month were employment jumps +873,000, it's entirely possible the drop of U3 is from people finding jobs. And that's the most likely explaination given the additional data in the report.
There's around 2% outside the labor force that should have jobs at a 66% participation rate. Maybe another 2% that have part-time jobs that would instead have full time jobs.
Yes, 70 years of data, all to make it look better. The awful data is also available. For free. At their website. No one is hiding anything.
The other thing is U3 (U5 old) actually has worked quite well since WWII. There's never been much need to modify the method of counting people who were looking vs the number of people in the labor force.
This situation is entirely different. It's hardly the BLS intention to hide it, but U3 has worked very well for most of the last 70 years. But now we face a majorly shifting workforce, more part time workers, many more outside the labor force than normal.
And if that persists, the BLS will likely change its methods to more accurately reflect measurements. In 1994, they change the method and U3 showed more unemployment than the old measurement. They are perfectly capable of doing that when needed.
Yes, Mitt Romney will create more jobs... if you live on Kolob.
Hello folks, while you are playing the Democrat Republican blame game the Federal Reserve and their subsidiaries are robbing us blind. While the elite continue to feed us sh!t, the sheeple are continually telling them what good cooks they are! Folks, both parties are the same serving their same masters, the Federal Reserve and Wall Street.
7.8% unemployment is only reality in bizarro world!
QE is going on all around the world and the schemes they are using is literally bizarro economics or as the banksters like to call it serving the people and doing God's work!
QE in Europe's latest scheme represents how the ECB can monetise the debt of "at risk" countries using
capitalthe printing press, while allowing the ECB to control inflation and the size of the money supply. In short, it appears to allow the eurozone to pay its debts with printed money and then remove it from the system at a later date – in other words the eurozone can pay its bills…then burn the money it used to pay them with. The system in principle at least allows for the payment of interest on "at risk" nation debt ( therefore controlling yield rates) and allows for the repayment of the principle capital on existing bonds. All with a ratio of printed money v. real money that would be classed as fraud if it was attempted by any organisation other than the ECB. The clever thing is that the more bonds the ECB buys, the better the ratio…..and the easier the matrix is to maintain. This can only occur if the sheeple allow themselves to be fleeced!
The viability of the ECBs balance sheet is a nonsense, as under this system it can guarantee repayment of both yields and principles on all the bonds it buys so it doesn't have to classify them as liabilities. And once it's been repaid with its own printed money it can remove it from the system. Bizarro economics folks!
It can effectively recapitalise the banks, recapitalise "at risk" nations, and ensure that currently stable nations stay that way….all the while ensuring that cuts the Germans want are made with little risk other than to the
peasantspopulation. And as we know already, the population doesn't count in their calculations.
In the United States QE3 will not reduce unemployment (7.8 %, right, only in bizarre world), put money in the pockets of consumers, reflate the money supply, or significantly lower interest rates for homeowners, as alleged. It will not achieve those things because it consists of no more than an asset swap on bank balance sheets. It will not get dollars to businesses or consumers on Main Street.
The true goal of QE Infinity is to unwind the toxic mortgage debacle in a way that won't bankrupt pensioners. If not for the bail outs anyone with anything in the stock market would have lost everything.
The challenge for Ben Bernanke and the Fed governors since the 2008 bailouts has been how to deal with the backlog of fraud – not just fraudulent mortgages and fraudulent mortgage securities but the 1.4 quadrillion derivatives piled on top and the politics of who owns them, such as sovereign nations with nuclear arsenals, and how they feel about taking massive losses on AAA paper purchased in good faith. Not to mention the 800 trillion asset manipulation via the Libor scandal. Who's gone to prison?
On one hand, you could let them all default which is what would happen in a true free market capitalist system. The problem is the criminal liabilities would drive the global and national leadership into factionalism that could turn violent, not to mention what such defaults would do to liquidity in the corrupt financial system. Then there is the fact that a great deal of the fraudulent paper has been purchased by pension funds. So the mark down would hit the retirement savings of the people who have now also lost their homes or equity in their homes. The politics of this in an election year are terrifying for the Administration to contemplate. Lies, lies and more lies are presented to the sheeple so not to bruise their fragile sensibilities as the presidential debates serves as a distraction while banksters rob the population bind.
How can the Fed make the investors whole without wreaking havoc on the economy? Using its QE tool, it can quietly buy up toxic mortgage-backed securities (MBS) with money created on a computer screen.
The hedge fund investors will get their money back, the banks will reap their unearned profits, and Fannie and Freddie will get bailed out and wound down. But what about the homeowners? They too bought in good faith, and now they are either underwater or are losing or have lost their homes. Will they too get a break? Not a chance, they can count on the sheeple to take the blame and blame the middle class and poor through the manipulation of the corporate owned media.
The banks will make out like bandits as they have before. The never-ending backdoor bailout will keep feeding their profit margins, and the banks will keep biting the hands of the taxpayers who feed them.
Only if the banking system is under the control of the people can it be expected to serve the people.
Private sector banking has spectacularly failed – and we need a democratic public solution. But alas who will stand up to the Federal Reserve and their fractional reserve banking system? Will you?
Use your heads people. You can't create just over 100,000 jobs and have nearly a million go back to work. It's impossible. Those numbers are a crock.
Jobs comes from the business survey. The number of employed comes from the household survey. They don't correlate on a month to month basis.
And yes, 873,000 people can go back to work because *an existing job* is not a *created job*, qed, if a position has already been created by a company in previous months (you know, the BLS revised +386,000 for the year, and +86,000 for the last 2 months, and there's 3+ million jobs open right now) and someone fills it....
The business survey is not going to pick it up as a created job. But the household survey likely will pick up that person that started working.
So....use that thing between your ears. Or maybe look into the data before winging assumptions.
How does the jobless rate drop when we only added 114,000 jobs? (And next month the number will be revised but that won't be a headline story.)
This is the new government math. Good for Obama, bad for America.
Agree! And how convenient just before the election.
Yeah, next month the number will be revised, for instance, like this month's employment report revised the two previous months' numbers UPWARDS.
because they are LYING flat out..they are getting desperate, and will resort to ANY means to try to get the assh*le elected.. thats what this country has come to..how sad..
We need not less of 150,000 new jobs to notch 0.1% down, but with 114, 000 job added went down from 8.2 % to 7.9 % ??????????????lies, lies, spin, spin ,spin from DOD I want to see the adjusted numbers.
Lies?
27 lies in 38 min - Mitt R$mney
I was against 47% of the country and stood by my decision - Mitt R$mney.
My campaign is for 100% of the country - Mitt R$mney.
I was completely wrong about the 47% - Mitt R$mney.
Do we need to say more about the LYING Mitt R$MNEY
These numbers have been fiddled by Obama.
Sherry...or you implying Democrats lie? They would never do that. Just ask one their favorite leaders of all time Bill "I did not have sex with that woman" Clinton. He'll set you straight in a heart beat.
Hs321 - Are you implying that Republicans never lie:
Mark Foley

Political manipulation on obama's part! He has to respond somehow to his dismal performance at the first debate... and this is it, can't wait to hear him spin this! Sorry Barry, you already exposed yourself as a liar and incompetent! Jobs are still an issue that you don't have a clue how to fix.
Now increasing the size of the Federal Government, without a corresponding increase of revenue to the Fed is something you're really good at!
Romney/Ryan 2012
Red, Yo! Read the article. The prior two months were revised up by 86,000. 114,000 + 86,000 = 200,000 new jobs! How many did you say we need? 150,000? There you go!
Hint 200,000 is more than 150,000.
Again, nobody is paying attention. It is the household survey that is volatile but is where this 7.8 percent number comes from not the BLS payroll number we rely on. There are two surveys working here.
My only question is when government workers ask people if they are working now, and they reply yes, does that mean an actual job paying taxes, or is the reply akin to doing some babysitting? I have said for many years now that we need to be much more concerned with the quality of the job created. If people are out doing their own thing trying to find a way to put food on the table, that is super. But I want to know more about the job created.
What a coincidence. One month before the election and the jobless rate drops to 7.8%. Yeah right! This is a scam.
http://www.bls.gov/web/empsit/ces_cps_trends.pdf
This better explains how the two surveys work.
The U3 (the number that is usually reported) has been measured this way for a few decades now. If you don't like the measurement, then blame whomever decided a few decades ago that the U3 would be measured in this manner.
Exactly...All the libatards on here thumping their chests, when the DOL did nothing but lie to prop up their "Campaigner in Chief". How convenient that those numbers come out at this time. It's such bull$h!t, any one can see that these #'s are bogus.
notrocket...
I love how you guys tout 63,000+ Government jobs, and a majority of the rest being PART TIME jobs, as real job growth.
No matter how you slice it, Obama's job growth isn't even keeping up with the rate of growth of the nation.
Of course, no one is surprised by this as truth is in such short supply in this administration.
The real, unspoken. bottom line is that Obama and the dems have done absolutely nothing to spur economic development. Any growth, and that is a big if, is in spite of what Obama has done, not because of it. The fact is that this is still the slowest recovery since the Great Depression. Even the liberal CBO stated that passing the stimulus package would slow long-term growth. Obama admitted, with a chuckle, that it didn't work. No one on this site can point to anything that Obama has done that was intended to spur growth in the private sector. Nor can they point out how raising our national debt from just under $10 trillion to over $16 trillion in under 4 years has helped the economy. Of course, they want to tax the employers more, yet they can't explain how that would spur the economy either. I suppose they think that by making sure employers have less money in their pockets that the logical response would be for them to hire more people. No wonder the country is in such a mess.
notrocketscience read the article and explained is well. Others are so partisan they only read the headlines. They want doom and gloom. Ya it is another conspiracy! (sarcasm) Unbelievable...
I wonder what excuses the Romney campaign will use to explain this? They didn't count hose not looking for jobs? It was a mistake? It was not a mistake , but tampering?
It is jobs compared to the 750,000 a month we were losing at the end of the bushwackers term!
At least Obama won't have to apologize!!!!!!!!
Splendid. Now all Obama needs to do is get it down to 7.2% and he can tie Jimmy Carter.
I'm from Wisconsin and sorry, but I'm from Lying Ryan's district. Loser! Out to help the rich who live here and $4,000,000 given to him to make sure he does! Don't vote for wealth, power and not caring about the 47%.
I'm from Wisconsin and sorry, but I'm from Lying Ryan's district. Loser! Out to help the rich who live here and $4,000,000 given to him to make sure he does! Don't vote for wealth, power and not caring about the 47%.
NotRocketScientist,
It takes about 150K to go down 0.1%. Even at 200K, it should have only gone down to 8.0%. And, since the rate is a percentage of people who are actively seeking jobs, and more paople are coming back in, that makes it even harder to believe that 200k acheived the decline that should have taken 450K.
Hint, 200K is less than 450K.
I'm playing the bull crap card! We are short 4,000,000 jobs under the Obama administration's reign of keeping up with population growth (with a 'revised' 325,000 total jobs created during the Obama administration).
How is it possible to have 4,000,000 more unemployed today than 3.75 years ago, but the "unemployment rate" is exactly the same?
Someone above said it best: "spin, spin,spin...".
romney supporters are spinning in the wind.....
Terry and others, if the rate would have gone up you would have been touting it's accuracy.
From the article...
"giving President Barack Obama a potential upbeat talking point as the presidential race heads into the final innings"
WOW!! What timing... There's only one problem... it doesn't add up!!
You add a 114,000 jobs and the rate drops 3/10th of a percent... if this is true then we should have a rate of 2% or less because Obama has said he has created 5 million new jobs... something doesn't add up...
This is a last minute grasp to save the election!!!
But it doesn't add up, somebody is cooking the books!!
Let's turn the page on this failed presidency...
It looks like the GOP supporters are in denial. Can't wait to hear how Romney spins it. No one person knows how to erase the whiteboard like him.
Now some idoit wants to claim 7.8% is not the real number. Ok then less say its not the real number, why do you want to report it now but not when reagan, bush 1, clinton, bush 2? What is your motive for wanting to say this is not the real number? Yes we know what your motives are and we are not going to change the way we report numbers in the middle of an election. That is wrong but I'm sure you = Tea bagger would do the same. Just look at the voting fraud that is being commited by the republican party. All the while repubvoimts screamed voter fraud so let's get voter ID's. Knowing it will suppress the elderly and poor who votes democratic mostly.
It's to bad you have to cheat to win the election
It's to bad you have to call the President Racist names to win the election
It's to bad the economy IS Getting Better to stop you from winning the election
It's to bad you are associated with a bunch of stupid people within the repubvomit party
It's to bad a lot of people will go to jail for voters fraud. Including the person who the repubvomit party knew had a problem with voters fraud but hired him any way. I say who ever hired him should go to jail because he was an excessary to the crime that they know he would commit.
My name is Solutions539 and I approve this message.
how do you know that this number is real? easy, if you look at the ADP report (ADP is the biggest payroll service in the country), their employment numbers has consistently been higher than the Government number every month.
The Government does a survey for the month employment, and then revised them when all the paper work is completed. Wall street follow the ADP report, which comes one day before the Government number as an indicator.
If you do not know where this number comes from, do not comment !!!!
Solutions, I agree with every word except your name for the republican party. I just don't think we should go down to their level. We are better than that. Your post was very good though.
Solutions539, in which grade did you drop out of school? 5th or 6th I would suspect, as that seems to be where your literacy is stuck! A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
yay.......O&JOE 2012
Would you be happy if you knew that the number is not a true?
According to the NYT the economy needs to add 150,000 jobs a month just to keep up with population growth for the rate to remain the same.
Doesn't add up.
That is better than loosing jobs right? Mitt wants to take us back to 2007 when we were loosing jobs.
Careful, it looks like the libs are bound and determined to collapse any thread questioning these figures.
From the last line of an msn money article this morning:
"...many of the jobs added last month were part time. The number of people with part-time jobs who wanted full-time work rose 7.5 percent to 8.6 million."
It said the previous months reports were revised if you read the article
Mackster, don't get your pants in a bundle, it's only seasonal work. You see it every year. Wait til after the holidays it will go back up. You phucking libs will believe anything to hang on to this piece of $hit porch monkey. In other words GET A LIFE.
B I N G O, B I N G O, B I N G O and Bingo was his name-o. :)
Can you smell that??
That's the smell of the books being cooked!!
It just doesn't add up... if you can add 114,000 jobs to the market and have the unemployment rate drop 3/10 of a percent then we should have zero unemployment because Obama has said he has created 5 million new jobs...
So it just doesn't add up!!
Wrong. :) If you have any proof to your claim by all means show us.
Geez, the DOW is at a high off 2007/8's crash, the S&P an all time high last month, real estate is improving, unemployment is improving - still, not good enough for the GOPers.
NO GOP votes for 2012.
Prove it. :)
And it is just a coincidence that this stinking pile of dog poop known as the Obama Employment Report is a little bit smaller just before the libs last ditch effort to salvage access to that big white house on Pennsylvania Avenue with the well used golf course, private flying recreational vehicles, and 24 hour room service; which includes full time projectionists for its state of the art theatre.
If I were a lib I'd be ashamed of myself for supporting a Godless whore as president of these United States.
Because B.O. Stinks!
News Flash!: Markets up on expectaions of the changing of the guard
Well it's only human nature really. I mean you don't expect the doom and gloomers to be actually happen when things aren't going their way do you? ;)
Say goodbye to your talking point about how many months above 8% Republicans.
Waaaahhhhhh = Republican response to this article.
For the Republicans, the number would only be true if the unemployment rate went up....
Rich, just a little bit over the line, dont ya think??
I find it hilarious that people some think the BLS and their calculations are somehow subject to the President's approval. You don't understand math and statistics, therefore CONSPIRACY! Same garbage that was being spouted about the polls... the numbers just don't "feel" right, haha.
All that being said, its nice to see that number drop below 8%, regardless of who it benefits politically... I couldn't care less about that.
The unemployment rate is nothing but a lie. There are still 23 million people unemployed, and more and more being added to those ranks daily. The truth is, we are not adding enough jobs to keep up with the rate of population growth. By any real measure of success this jobs number however you cook it is a complete and utter failure. Obama will tout these numbers and say "See, things are getting better." The truth is it is only getting better if you consider more and more people out of work better. The only thing that has happened under this current administration is more and more people have fallen into the poverty level. Our president hasn't done his most important job, so it is time to fire him.
Reagan averaged 7.9% unemployment across his 8 years with a peak of approx 10%.
When Reagan hits those numbers - he's the pinnacle of conservatism and a true republican and leader of the US.
When Obama hits those numbers - he's failing at his job.
The hypocrisy of you people would be pathetic if it werent so hilarious.
Number of UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFIT Claims ROSE yesterday. Today the Unemployment rate goes down?
Not possible....Not Consistent....Not the Truth. If 10 people lose their jobs and 3 get hired, you are not better off. And of course you under employed or people who have given up the search just don't count. You have become nobodies in Obama's world, you aren't even bumps on the road. If he counted you as somebodies, the Unemployment rate would be 20%.
Libis can collapse comments but can't run from the truth. DOL spin the numbers all the time. this one is not an exception, 114,000 new jobs lower .3 % the unemployment rate when we need at least 150,000 in order to lower the unemployment. The kitchen in the DOL was buy yesterday to come up with this, there is no doubt, this is Obama's arithmetic. LOL
LOL best keep collapsing the truth Republitards. :D
@For several posters:
1) The numbers only include people actively seeking work. This is not to exclude people. That is just the definition that is used for this one measure. There are a number of other measures that DO include people eligible for work, people who are underemployed, etc.
2) Part time jobs are factored in as part time jobs. The jobs have to add up to 40 hours a week to be counted as one full time job. This is becoming an increasing problem as more and more employers use part time jobs and "temps" to avoid paying benefits, such as holiday pay and overtime.
3) Seasonal work is factored out. It is called seasonally-adjusted and such things as Christmas hires are factored out before the total is computed. This has always been done so that comparisons are not clouded by everything from agricultural work to summer jobs to holiday help.
4) The first numbers are based on a fairly small sample. They are adjusted again and again for the next several months as more complete numbers come in. The trend in adjustments during the recovery has been for the adjustments to push the numbers higher than the initial numbers. This is because often during a recovery, some sectors surge unexpectedly that are not well represented in the samples used for the initial numbers.
5) There are actually a large number of unemployment measures that measure different things and are all published online by the Bureau of Labor Statistics at http://www.bls.gov/cps/
Here is a summary from the BLS that is far more accurate and informative than the media articles: http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm
Chris - First of all, ROLL TIDE!
Secondly, don't you wonder why the Dow is up only 1/2% after the announcement of this tremendous drop in the unemployment rate (as of the time of this post)?
Chris - Not trying to hammer you. I've read your posts for quite some time. Although you are completely left-biased, you articulate well...
Don't you also consider the 8.6 MILLION underemployed to be worthy of note - alongside the note from your second link above regarding the number of participants 2011 over 2012 - where there has been a significant year over year decrease in the number of market participants?
As a side note, I wonder if the 8.6 million underemployed are the ones who have been forced into the food stamp program we hear so much about these days??? To make ends meet, these "employed" people have to do what it takes to get by. Perhaps including the food stamp numbers, the underemployed numbers, as well as the "unemployed" data would be a better gauge of how American's are doing - getting rid of the spin...???
I see the video in which the GE icon, Jack Welch bitching and moaning that "these Chicago guys could create jobs and so, they change the numbers". When Jack was the CEO of GE for 20+ years, he was the America's #1 "Outsourcer-in-Chief" and according to one estimate, shipped over 100,000 well paying design, engineering, and manufacturing jobs to India and China. He wrote the manuscript for his fellow CEOs on how to ship American jobs abroad. He was also the CEOs of CEOs who wrote the book on how to stack the Corporate Board with Cronies and how pay yourself outlandish compensation at the expense of Shareholders and Employees.
This fellow now talks about creating jobs in America. It's so funny that every one Romney's supporters (all his Wall Street gangstas and corporate goons) now believe they have a better plan to create jobs (less than minimum jobs for the most part) in this country. On the contrary, the republican benefactors' actions and proposals all involve tax cuts for the corporations, tax cuts for the rich, gutting Obama's clean energy goals, denying equal pay for equal work for women, etc. and they are contradictory to what they say to people in public.
I wouldn't trust anything these wall street gansta brothers of Romney have to say.
Better take another look, it's fixing to once again head into record territory....
Something about this jobs report just doesn't add up. We need between 125k-150k net additional jobs each MONTH
just to keep up with population growth. We got only 114k and the unemployment rate FELL 0.3%?
Meanwhile we continue to have more than 350k 1st time unemployment claims per WEEK (367k announced yesterday).
Simple math says 1.4M people filed first time unemplyment claims in September versus the 114 jobs that were created.
So even IF 90% of those unemployment claims were people who lost jobs before September and just got around to filing,
we'd still be at a slight negative "net" for the month.
All of the employment reporting is highly suspect in my opinion.
These jobs reports never do add up because it's interpreted through the dept. of smoke & mirrors
It's a conspiracy....right.
Obama said he'd get it below 8% and now, it's below 8% according to the department of labor, but all of you experts say the numbers are faulty.
Everyone at the DOL needs to be fired, and replaced with you posters, who are the true experts in this matter.<SARCASM>
OBAMA/BIDEN 2012
The 114k is net jobs added. This means if 2 million lost their jobs this month, 2.114 million people got a job this month.
Your post would have been more credible if you didn't end it/sign it with endorsing a candidate who is bound to benefit for this jobless "facts".
I did NOT say there is a conspiracy genius. What I said was that the numbers DO NOT ADD UP!
There is either some common sense way to explain this in a straight-forward way, or the data collection/measurement/interpretation methodology that is being used is unreliable. That goes for this month, last month and EVERY month before going back to when they first started trying to measure this.
Yeah man, we don't want to see the numbers go down, we don't want people to get jobs, we want this president to fail so we can get credit for the recovery when Romney wins...
Did you miss the part about the extra 86,000 months in the two prior months?
you seem to be over simplifying it to match your narrative. What does population increase have to do with job growth as it pertains to the unemployment rate...
you're reaching a little. You know the unemployment rate has been calculated the same way for a long time..i don't remember this many people ever complaining about it before.
djrashn,
Actually, President Obama, or his surrogates, said it wouldn't go over 8% when the stimulus was proposed. Three and a half years later, he's finally gotten it below the rate, that according to his analysis (or his surrogates) that it shouldn't have exceeded.
Good job Mr. President!!
There was a revision of 386,000 jobs by the Labor Department after their annual review at the end of September.
I find it amusing, Republicans cum all over themselves thinking Romney won the debate, and he did until the fact checkers nailed him. Lies from beginning to end. Now they are rooting against the job numbers because it threatens them some way. I sure wish the republicans would just STFU and leave.
This is definitely suspect. What convenient timing. Supposedly economists were expecting 115, 000 job growth and an 8.2% unemployment rate. Instead less jobs (114,000) were added and yet the number fell to 7.8% hmmm curious. Either the workforce they're getting their percentage from decreased or there's some shadiness going on. And why would we trust the Labor Department. They'll probably quietly revise this number as well.
A survey of households from which the jobless rate is derived showed 873,000 job gains last month, the most since June 1983.
I think it adds up
A little confusing? Its down right fraudulent! Rush Limbaugh was right yet again...he predicted this exact scenario a few months ago. More folks should listen to him.
It's funny that the Republicans are saying the number don't add up, but they believe Romney's tax plan with work.
LOL, this is one big fat lie. Wake up w working people, don't make the same mistake again. Romney has been successful at everything he has done. BHO............ well lets go golfing and drink some of my home made beer.
ROFL! Yes - why dont more reasonable, intelligent people pay attention to Rush. Oops - looks like I just answered my own question.
The only time the republicans readily admit the numbers add up and they rave and want to party about it is if the unemployment numbers climb. It's like they readily acknowledge devastation as a successful goal within their own ranks. After all, they did rejoice in taking unemployment from 3.6% to 7.6% and rapidly climbing when we finally had to 86 them out of power to stop their destruction. They try to say that the President is a muslim and works for Al Quaida but yet it's Al Quaida and the Taliban rooting for the republicans.
At outsourcing? At screwing people out of their retirements and pensions?
He's not been successful at everything he does. 2008 election nuff evidence for you?
Poor Republitards. They must be getting tired of hitting the No Value link by now. :D
Yeah, it's called the truth, it never adds up to the stupid. :)
LOL
/SNAP
If the garden variety liberals can make themselves believe that the divisive racist in the oval office is a good choice after 4 years of unrelenting failures then they should have no trouble swallowing this fabricated bs.
Another spin from the DOL to help Obama. All the numbers changes after 2 weeks , DOL come up with adjusted numbers, all the time higher than the first report. Remember GDP after Obama made a big fanfarrie about the economy going in the rigth path , it went down from 1,7 % to 1,2%. The corrected numbers appear in the last page of the papers, in small print.
Obama lie machine. Change you can beleive.
Ah, a bigot calling a Black president a racist. Priceless. :)
The numbers do add up if you add them politically. A SMALL gain in jobs equates to a LARGE DROP in the unemployment rate of 0.3%?!!!! Just HOW STUPID does this administration think people are?!
Jeff-159,
The president isn't racist? Just look at the news releases for the beginning of his term. Look at his associations with "religious" people. Look at his AND hers photo ops with black and brown children and adults ONLY at the start of his administration. Racist? Oh hell no.
And if the numbers were not in Obama's favor you would be yelling from the highest mountain how these numbers show the failure of the president.
You people are hypocritical clowns.
There's been job growth for the last 3 years, how stupid are you? Plenty it looks like. :D
Jeff - you help prove the point that liberals only see what they want to see - and get all their news from CNN and MSNBC. You are unbelievably uninformed - and seem willing to advertise it.
Do some research that doesn't involve the biased left wing media bs you've been happily swallowing.
While you're at it - look up the definition of bigot. I doubt that you'll do any research as your posts almost always indicate a lack of research - just regurgitating what you hear other left wing liberals say.
Poor Chuckles. Suxs being you today. :(
You should be proud to be a bigot. Stick up for your racist remarks. I mean it's the true you after all. :)
Why were the numbers revised and why was it shown to be government jobs? I agree government jobs help the unemployed and that is great for the unemployed but it does not help the debt as this is government spending tax payer monies again. We need growth in the private sector and we need to reduce government to reduce the debt. Simple math right Obama?
Because more data was gathered and it was revised. That's how data works. You get more, things change. Got it?
BTW it was Private Sector jobs, not government jobs that showed growth. They actually lost jobs in the government sector. You know, just like what the Republicans DO want.
Jeff your post might be taken more seriously if maybe you could write a post without the childish name calling.
@ Jeff;
Just more of the same immature insults, you add nothing to the conversation.
of course unemployment dropped in the 3rd quarter, didn't the teachers and bus drivers just go back to work?? They DO make up part of the unemployment rate don't they?? next the libs will be saying it went down again when the "seasonal" holiday jobs open up next month.....they can spin anything to suit their cause. But in reality everyone is still looking for a secure job.
*sniff; breaks out the worlds smallest violin.*
When you Republitards wish to be treated like adults stop lying like children. :)
how do you know that this number is real? easy, if you look at the ADP report (ADP is the biggest payroll service in the country), their employment numbers has consistently been higher than the Government number every month.
The Government does a survey for the month employment, and then revised them again when all the paper work is completed. Wall street follow the ADP report, which comes one day before the Government number as an indicator.
If you do not know where this number comes from, do not comment !!!!
RB -I doubt that teachers/school employees had signed up for unemployment - they wouldn't be part of the count.
You are right though, numbers can be spun to show almost anything. It will be interesting to see results when these figures have been analyzed.
How can anyone say,"Rush Limbaugh is right again." Rush Limbaugh is never right. He's a blabbering, self-important control freak, who only has any following because of the significant amount of weak-minded people in this country who are so easily controlled.
We need not less of 150,000 new jobs to notch 0.1% down, but with 114, 000 job added went down from 8.2 % to 7.9 % ??????????????lies, lies, spin, spin ,spin from DOD I want to see the adjusted numbers. This is Obama's arithmetic.
I'll be back in a while to poke you ants with a stick some more over this. L8R for now. :D
Kornfed:
Okay, then if Romney is elected then I predict the unemployment rate will drop. But, that will only be because he is being fraudulent and fixing the numbers. If they don't drop, then I will attack him for being incompetent anyway.
This stuff is easy!
Even if fewer people are wanting to work, that's only a problem if you assume that they should want to work. Honestly, I don't see it being a problem if somebody chooses to be a stay-at-home parent rather than work at a call center with low pay and no benefits only to drop $20,000 in childcare. People crying about anyone who does that should really STFU.
Temporary help jobs - almost flat in August.
Manufacturing payrolls fell for a second straight month.
Construction employment rose 5,000
Government payrolls rose 10,000 after increasing 45,000 in August. Average hourly earnings rose 7 cents last month, which could support spending.
Adding GOVERNMENT JOBS does not help the economy... government SPENDS money, it does not CREATE money
No one can pin down Mitt on what he believes. Mitt surely has forgotten exactly what he has said on any number of topics, at this point. Sad.
(His last statement... he said, quote, that he was "completely wrong" on the 47% remark, and has apologized.)
@ John;
Perfect description of the biased liberal media refusing to report unfiltered news and the uninformed and non-engaged people that accept it.
Before Obama and crew start partying, I would suggest that they explain why DOL (Federal agency) issued the following today about jobless claims:
“In the week ending September 29, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 367,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 363,000. The 4-week moving average was 375,000, unchanged from the previous week's revised average.”
If claims went up by 4,000, makes you wonder who dropped out of the job market this time.
Be smart – get rid of Obama/Biden.
So what you're saying is that the numbers from a previous quarter weren't as bad as reported, because the teachers and bus drivers would have been included in that? And yet I bet you were jumping on those numbers as being "not good enough" or something!
My wife is one of the people that is no longer unemployed and found a job. For the last 3 months she had a temp position, and starts a full time position elsewhere a week on Monday. Overall we will be $15k a year better off than we were before Obama took office.
WOW!! Just imagine if we had created 115K jobs the rate would have been down to 7%, LOL. This is pure bull sh.t politics.
Shades of Carter, trying to manipulate the numbers so it looks good for an election. For all you libies I never said Obama was not smart, Carter was smart too, just not what America needs to lead us. Politically it is not a lie, but I remember a gag with Abott and Costello where 7x7=21, they could prove that also but it does not make it true.
Yep, tontosh. The numbers lie but we have to remember that the Dept. of Labor is filled with Obama's people. Also, many businesses are hiring seasonal help for Christmas. Macy's already said they were going to hire over 30,000 people JUST for the Christmas rush. The economy stinks and Obama will do ANYTHING to improve his image after his lackluster performance in the 1st debate!
Lol the comment collapsers are back...GOP must be on the defensive again. Amazing they cannot be happy that Americans are finding work and not being freeloaders. I get tired of calling you the "H" word so much, it gets overused anymore :P.
Don't cry about how they count the U3, not like it changed or anything. You ignore math most other days, but since you got your calculators out how much will Mitt's tax plan ADD to our deficit? You know that thing you all keep crying about. How about that extra money the military does not even need? How about you show me how you can make 1000 times what others make without forcing them to make LESS? How is he going to pay for it all? By having our do-nothing lazy Congress (wanna talk about freeloaders?) that has not passed a budget in 3 years close loopholes he cannot even name or specify...GREAT PLAN, WHAT A GREAT LEADER THAT IS.
It is amazing our economy is doing as well as it is considering our Congress has done nothing to help the American people. The only thing they can agree on it to take away more of our rights so that they may stay in power.
I am tired of coddling you and telling you that I feel sorry for you. Sorry, but you should have never been allowed to acquire as much money as you did. Regardless of if it was legal or not you cannot make unlimited amounts of money. You have to give some of it back. YOU WILL STILL HAVE WAY MORE THEN THE VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE. THEREFORE, WTF ARE YOU STILL CRYING ABOUT. How can you not understand that if people are allowed to make 1000 to 1 ratios that only 0.1% of the population on average can make that amount? That is why our economy is stagnant not to mention the jobs being shipped overseas.
LIARS! I swear this is the biggest lie ever told to us by the crap media. The writer needs to laid off...learn what unemployment is in the real world...
We are nothing but a bunch of drones
Didn't anyone listen to the President during the debate? It is arithmetic. Yea, give me a break Mr President. We all know your FUZZY MATH. Besides that, the jobs are probably all seasonal minimum wage with no benefits as well. So tell your cronies that cook the books they are not fooling us with this B/S jobs report.
I'm just going to pick out a few dates here, so you can compare.
Oct 25, 2008 - 476.25k
April 26, 2008 - 361.5k
Oct 27, 2007 - 329.25k
April 28, 2007 - 321.00k
Oct 28, 2006 - 315.50k
Those are the 4 week averages for people filing initial unemployment claims. Now, a question for you. How do you suppose the unemployment rate was only at 4.6 in 2006 and 2007 and 5.8 in 2008 with those numbers of people filing for unemployment? The answer to that question is the answer to yours.
Honestly, I don't think you understand what on earth you're talking about.
(Sources - http://ycharts.com/indicators/average_initial_claims_for_unemployment_insurance and http://www.bls.gov/cps/prev_yrs.htm)
Change is government jobs, estimated to cut for the previous months, turns out they added a significant amount. Must be the need for food stamp distributors.
The real unemployement rate -- using the same number of available workers as 2009 is around 11%.
From DOL and statistics.
The Employment Situation for September 2012 is scheduled to be released on October 5, 2012, at 8:30 A.M. Eastern Time.
Real Earnings for September 2012 is scheduled to be released on October 16, 2012, at 8:30 A.M. Eastern Time.
Unemployment rate will go back to 8.2 % , but this time won’t be in the news.
I highlighted the part of your comment that makes the rest of it totally meaningless.
Funny how MSNBC left out the part where the ACCURATE and TRUSTED report shows hiring SLOWING;
"A separate survey of employers, considered the key metric that Wall Street watches, showed businesses added 114,000 jobs in September. It marked a slowdown in hiring, after July and August were revised significantly higher.
Those revisions added 86,000 more jobs than originally reported in the summer."
http://money.cnn.com/2012/10/05/news/economy/september-jobs-report/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
P.S.
I give credit for MSNBC at least admitting that the other report is worthless... even if their brain-dead sheep audience would rather be lied to than hear the truth;
"The unemployment report is based on the so-called Household Survey and it measures the number of unemployed as a percentage of the labor force. It is notoriously volatile and economists don’t put much stock in it,"
This is in line with what I'm seeing on the street. Young people I know are going back to work or are starting to look again. One guy has been out of work so long he no longer has a car. He says that there is work out there now but he can't get to it. We are working on that, and no, public transportation is not the answer here.
This is good news for Americans.
What a clever spin on the job market! Let me guess, I'm home today because someone needed my services? Yeah, right. My boss is constantly late with my paychecks because businesses wait until the last possible minute before it goes into collections.
Just what kind of jobs are they referring to? Seasonal employment? This is just more smoke and mirrors. Just yesterday MSNBC printed an article where they were looking at disillusioned workers and how they were going to vote.
pjam;
You are correct about quite a lot of things - and great work on the research.
It is soooo telling that the left wingers posting here - almost every last one - stopped their thinking process and search for the truth at the end of the MSNBC headline. Why is that?
Wake up people. You're getting only half the truth, and as Barry has proved time and again it is the easiest way to spread a lie. Do you believe that obscure film was the catalyst for the attacks on our embassies? Do you believe that Barry had no pre-knowledge of planned attacks? Do you believe that there is not a 2007 video of his racist rant? If you can answer "no" to these questions then CNN's work is done and you're completely in the dark - which is exactly HOW you can accept these bogus numbers without questioning it.
@ unhappy:
I hope your job situation improves.
The spin isn't so clever that most of us can't see through it. The easiest way to believe there is an improvement in the job market and unemploment figures is to read them through the bottom of your obamarama kool-aid glass.
I do agree that the numbers don't add up, so let's check the method used to make these numbers...A survey of households from which the jobless rate is derived showed 873,000 job gains last month, the most since June 1983. The drop in unemployment came even as Americans come back into the labor force to resume the hunt for work. The workforce had shrunk in the prior two months. The household survey is volatile, however.
The number of employed Americans comes from a government survey of 60,000
households that determines the unemployment rate. The government asks a series
of questions, by phone or in person. For example:
Do you own a business? Did you work for pay? If not, did you provide unpaid work for a family business or farm? (Those who did are considered employed.)
Afterward, the survey participants are asked whether they had a job and, if so,
whether it was full or part time. The government's definition of unemployed is
someone who's out of work and has actively looked for a job in the past four
weeks. (what does it mean if you are not actively looking? are you then considered Employed?)
The government also does a second survey of roughly 140,000 businesses to
determine the number of jobs businesses created or lost.
All this was courteousy of
This is how you got your number to under 8% which a few news papers predicted would have to happen in order for Obama to be reelected. There's too many sites there to list (NY Post, Business Week, USNews, Bloomburg), so just Bing or Google "Obama Reelection Unemployment" if you want to see some funny stuff.
It also seems there's some comments about the math with Romney's tax plan and believing that and not the unemployment number making people look uneducated. Ok, let's see...
If I lower the amount that I pay in per week from 15% to say...12% and I lower what I get from my standard deduction from $3500 to say...$2000, then I would pay less per paycheck but more at the end of the year. Hmm....
It's just math guys. Don't be afraid to do it. The President thinks we need more math and science in schools, don't be afraid to practice it in your everyday lives too.
You mean by figuring out the unemployment rate the same way as has been done for years. Yep, some conspiracy there!
Yes, if your income is $50,000 then what you're saying means no change. If your income is $70,000 then it means paying less in taxes that will need to be recompensed. If your income is $40,000 it means paying MORE in taxes.
I can do math too.
Damn Jeff, where or when did I post that I was a republican? Just because I commented on your childish name calling does not mean that I am a republican. Your reply says a lot about you Jeff. It's time for you to grow up!
I don't see how it could unemployment could drop with only 114,000 finding employment. Does this include those who gave up looking for work?
You are not counted in the U3 unemployment number as unemployed if you have not made an attempt to find a job in the last month to find a job.
You are also not counted in the unemployment number if you spend all day on the internet reacting to political posts........
Bad news for Romney and about half the attack ads by Rove and crew.
It is obvious that the majority of individuals are too lazy to reach all the information. The unemployment rate dropped because of the annual adjustment of an additional 386,000 jobs that were not originally reported + an adjustment of an additional 86,000 jobs that were not reported for August and July + the $114,000 for September. So I know Republicans have a had time doing basic Math so don't let your heads explode when you add the three numbers together (386,000+86,000+114,000) = 586,000 added to the total over the last month that is how the rate dropped below 8%.
Great Job America - for getting America back to work!! Seems we are moving forward on the "Right Track" with President Obama -why move backwards with the "Liar".
Sorry I keep forgetting Republicans can't handle the "Facts"
The question not asked is how many of our fellow Americans have stopped looking for work, thus falling out of the statistical calculation, plus the number of people no longer receiving benefits? I think you will find that the actual unemployment figure is somewhere in the 15% range.
It is sad that a government would both discount real people and cast them aside for political gain.
Mark:
You are talking about the 47%, right?
OBAMA the COMMIE: "I'm the President of all Americans".......... especially the 8% from Latin America.
Self Educated Voter - The Labor Department numbers are not right because you are not factoring in the ling term unemployment. First overall self employed people are people that are trying to sell insurance, real estate or some other straight commission job. Counting this number is not correct because you are not paying anything into unemployment insurance and the number is very suspect. second you cannot go back an add in additional jobs from 60 days, if that was the case then you would have to add all the underemployed and people that are not counted after 30 straight days of unemployment. You have to remember if the labor department in each state does not call you back you are considered not part of the work force and you're then counted as back in the work force VERY FALSE. I know this because one I am unemployed and two had to go back on unemployment after being self employed so I could get the rest of my benefits. It's like job creation you can say you created 5 million jobs when you lost 4.8 millions jobs with only a net gain of 200,000 people. The job creation is a running total that goes up and down by month you can right to the Labor Statistics and see the running total of net loss and net jobs gained. THESE ARE THE FACTS and if you like I will be glad to send you a link to the labor department for you to see. If the president really thinks this is great then he should really be honest with people in how the labor department really counts unemployed workers, if you're educate and research you would then be truthful with yourself.
TOTAL B.S. another case of the liberal media trying to prop up a failed socialist President, all that has happened is the cheap chain stores have started hiring for the holiday season at minumum wage and part time. This is just the media a-holes reaching out to kiss obama rear end again, they almost broke down a cried in public when obama seemed like a high schooler in the debate. The real jobs are not there, period. I cannot remember when the democrats have sunk so low in their ignorance except in the case of carter. Do you people really not care that under obama the cost of every thing has increased to where a person cannot earn a living, can you not remember that under the Clinton administration gas was 1.50 a gallon and 1.78 a gallon during the Bush years. If obama wins another term the cost of your power bill will increase two fold, if you power bill is 100.00 a month it will be 200.00, can you afford that. I am all for cleaning the environment, but crap lets do it over time and not try to do it all at once to where it will hurt us more than we already are. Obama is for big government that will tell you what to do,how to do it and when to do it and you do not have a say in it.

WHERE'S MEXICO?
Interestingly, according to the BLS website, the 386,000 jobs that are being adjusted is a preliminary report. The final report is not scheduled to be issued until February 2013....post election.
And what about the 48% of americans who had given up looking for work because of this economy, what don't they count? is it you need these numbers to make Obama look good.
read this then tell me about it!
The spin do cometh.
Republican'ts failed. Their goal was Unempolyement above 10% in hopes of making President Obama a 1 term President and they have totally Failed. And todays polls show that Obama was not seriously hurt by his lack of readiness. Maybe this will teach the President that he HAS to be fully ready Dispite the current crisis ongoing. Maybe now he will not scratch all those meetings with Senator John Kerry for practicing debates.
I also see the Republican'ts have dispatched their Plumbers to all the Forums and to Newsvine to collapse any and all opposition to their candidate, Corporate Raider Willard "Tax Cheat" Romney. Collapse away Republican'ts, keep hiding from the solid truth!!!
And thats my opinion.
Nothing suspicious here you silly republicans. So what if it was the largest single drop in the unemployment numbers in 30 years, so what if it happened two days after your republican candidate gave the worst beat down in history to our wonder child. There is absolutely nothing suspicious here. duh
Vince--stop trying to reason with the believers, it is more like a cult than a party, they will not believe you anyway. I do appreciate your insight and your attempt to convey information clearly. Remember Romney did not win the first debate, he lied, he was unfair and he did not let the President respond, ask anyone on MSNBC. Oops I forgot it was the moderators fault for not controlling the debate. Blame, blame, blame except for this report which is an ambitious attempt to sway the voter Chicago style. Next Cousin Vinny is going to call.
Are you seriously trying to say that more than 48% of americans (of a working age, etc) are unemployed? You are nuts!
Quick... people are starting to notice that the Emporer has no clothes! Lets "revise" those bad numbers folks... now!
hello.....what amount of people fell off unemployment and still dont have work? Obama if your so truthful...if your so good at math, arithmetic, then tell us this. Obama, you are a flat out liar but you dont care because you have made a legacy up there with your people...not down here though...i see what you care about...win...nothing more but to win...thats all you care about and we will see what a loser you our as a President when there is nothing to campaign for...I ll let you win. Go ahead you baby win already. Im so sick of you and your politicians you make me want to puke.
Its amazing that someone gives Obama credit for getting a job...what a spineless drone.
So now the unemployement rate is calculated by a survey of households?!?!? So the labor dept can make this number anything they want by chosing the households?!?!?
Is this some kind of new Obama math?
GETDUMBERHERE
your post reflects your name quite well
What a pathetic ploy to think Americans are so stupid to fall for these bogus numbers. Look around - there is no work for those who have lost their jobs. Most have given up and not even looking. One can make numbers say anything they want them to say to further their political agenda. That is how so many have lost their jobs. Corporate America downsizing. I for one, am not buying into to. Are they trying to count the "temporary" jobs for the upcoming holidays? Jobs that will also be gone as soon as the holidays are over.
I find it a little bit to convenient after a lost debate from Mr. Obama. His debate as shown what many have known for the last 4 years. He is ineffective and unqualified for the job.
Keep these in mind...

Does Obama have any control on these?
NO
Does the GOP control all of congress?
You bet they do.
Imagine the numbers is the GOP weren't such aholes.
Jerry - The media is reporting the numbers they are not creating the numbers, so how is that "the liberal media" spinning to help the president? The fact you say "the liberal media" proves you're a foxbot, I suggest you turn off Fox brainwashing and find your own facts because you won't find any there. As far as the increase in utilities, we heard that 4 years ago and my bill went down. Another Fox scare tactic.
Bobster,
It's been counted that way since 1940! Just because you haven't paid attention before...
http://www.bls.gov/cps/cps_htgm.htm
This was just yesterday's article on MSNBC. Now all of a sudden, unemployment is down below 8%?
Hahaha!!!!!
Just how stupid does the President think we are?
Obama campaign manipulating numbers.
And the media is very liberal.
robo: no! you are, you dumbs---libs. wanna believe and say anything that you think is true. if the BLS would incorporate the 8.5% of unemployed vets, that true number would be 16.3%. and this does not include those who dropped out and tuned off trying to find work. but, here is another great so-called oct surprise: the housing market has gone up by 4.8% in home buying.wanna bet that will be posted next before the debate with ryan and biden.
BS! 114K is a tiny tiny tiny number. The 7.8% does NOT count all those falling off the unemployment rolls. Nor does it count all the underemployed part timers. All I'm seeing is lower and lower sales of critical items matched up with just-barely-in-time deliveries.
Not much is really going to happen until after the election. Right now? Businesses don't know WHAT to do.
Do you know what I find pathetic, that repugs ignore polls when behind, but as soon as there neck and neck, suddenly they count. Just like unemployment numbers, as long as they stay above 8% there correct, but as soon as they fall under 8% somehow there fixed. That's what I call pathetic.
These numbers are completely skewed...The criteria they use is deceptive and misleading and does not take into account out of work Americans whose unemployment benefits have been exhausted...Yes, they do end and when they do your are screwed...This is not taken into account and guaranteed there are a lot more Americans who fit that mold than in 2009...It's BS...However, blind liberals that are furthest from the TRUE REALITY of unemployment really don't care..they just grasp at anything to make it appear that they are right and this President is doing a great job and everyone else is wrong...and those who disagree with them are evil.
BO, the republicans don't control congress, they only control the house. Why is it that you only cite bills that came from the democrat side? Everything that came from the house, was and still is, blocked by the democrat controlled senate, mainly Harry Reid. Show me one item that has gone to the senate floor for discussion or a vote that came from the house. Reid has blocked everything and is still doing it.
BO 2012 - I defy you to show one of the pieces of legislation above as "100% clean bills". They aren't as nice as their titles.
The republicans' opinion is the direction the "riders" attached to these bills is taking the country in the wrong direction. They say no with sound reasoning on each bill. But all that gets reported is 'the republicans are the party of NO', or 'the republicans hate veterans', or 'the republicans want to take away food stamps for the needy'.
There are always reasons for a denial. We have become so partisanly divided, anything that does not go our favorite parties way is considered an attack WORTHY of what we call NEWS.
You heard your president yourself in the debate when Romney said republican's had a plan for working WITHthe democrats on healthcare. Obama replied something like 'sometimes a leader has to stick to their guns and say NO'. He even repeated it... Instead of working with the opposition, your president admitted on national TV it was 'his way or the highway'. Pathetic for a POTUS!
The propaganda spew to the American people is only going to get worse until election day... they are even planing a new "Obama killed Osama" movie to be released right before election day:
Film dramatizing bin Laden raid airing Nov. 4
""Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden," from The Weinstein Co. and Voltage Pictures, will air Sunday, Nov. 4, the channel said Thursday. President Barack Obama faces Republican challenger Mitt Romney at the polls two days later.
Weinstein co-chairman Harvey Weinstein is a prominent fundraiser for Obama's re-election campaign, which has touted bin Laden's death as an example of the president's leadership."
http://news.yahoo.com/film-dramatizing-bin-laden-raid-airing-nov-4-025427068.html
P.S.
Being president when a U.S. adversary is killed shows "leadership"... gee if only Bush had done that... what happened to Saddam Hussein AND HIS SONS by the way? Bush must have been 3 x the leader as B.O.
The house controls the power exclusively to initiate revenue bills. In other words they greatly control the pocketbook of the country. It allows them the power to just defund things to make laws essentially ineffective amongst other things. They can simply sit on their hands and bring the country to a financial standstill and the Senate or the President can do nothing about it , so yes , in many ways , many important ways in this economy, they do control much of what congress needs to get done.
All you posters claiming manipulation and such. Do you know anyone who has been out of work? I do and they've all been saying the same thing: over the year they have been seeing many more openings to apply to. A year ago, they couldn't find anything in their field to even submit their resume for. Several have already secured either free lance or full time positions. A few more are still looking, but they are much more optimistic these days. There's nothing worse than waking up unemployed and checking out all the job sites only to find zero listings that you can apply for.
Granted, this is in a major metro area so small towns still may not see an improvement. But overall, things ARE getting better. My company's (49B market cap) stock is up 34% this year due to increased demand for IT services and we are currently hiring. This is much different from 2-3 years ago when we were doing anything we could to shed staff/freeze hiring.
I don't care what your political affiliation is, you should be darn happy that the country is doing better. Those people who would rather see doom and gloom to help their political party are disgusting.
To be fair, it's hard to prep for a debate when your challenger changes all of his positions the night before...
Still, many of the jobs the economy added last month were part time. The number
of people with part-time jobs who wanted full-time work rose 7.5 percent to 8.6
million, the most since February 2009.
The government also does a second survey of roughly 140,000 businesses to
determine the number of jobs businesses created or lost.(BLS number)
And finally, Still, many of the jobs the economy added last month were part time. The number
of people with part-time jobs who wanted full-time work rose 7.5 percent to 8.6
million, the most since February 2009.
All this was courteousy of
So the majority of people going "back to work" either stopped looking for work or took underemployment? This is how you got your number to under 8% which a few news papers predicted would have to happen in order for Obama to be reelected. There's too many sites there to list (NY Post, Business Week, USNews, Bloomburg), so just Bing or Google "Obama Reelection Unemployment" if you want to see some funny stuff.
I'm not trying to help any political party. Professional politicians are the lowest form of life in my opinion. I just want to see someone up there who isn't going to lie to me. Yeah, Mitt got caught with his pants around his ankles on the 47% comment. But at least he wasn't trying to sugar coat anything or apease me with what I thought I wanted to hear. I need more reality in my real life, not sugar coating. An I am an INDEPENDANT voter, with an independant mind who would rather see the glory of the Constitution of the Untied States realized then live in a socialist state.
I did not post my sourcing for my comment, so if you look on the MSN Money section under the article "US jobless rate falls to 7.8 pct-44 month low", you'll find all the information I posted
Why not just say the unemployment is down to 6%? It sounds better, and is just as believable!
Self Educated Voter, your teacher failed!
Looks like the Republican controlled house is finally paying dividends!!! Happy days are here again!!!!
AHH MAN THAT SMELLS GOOD...
WHAT IS THAT COOKING???
OHH IT'S THE BOOKS....
Do they really think the American people are dumb enough to believe this crap??
Most of the new jobs this time of year are TEMPORARY jobs for the Holiday rush, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. So, this is just a fluke by the Labor Dept. to get Numb Nuts re-elected!
When he says that HE created 400,000 jobs [DUH!] I would like to know what in the crap they are doing? Big Corporations are laying off thousands. Lockheed is laying off 1400 people, but Numb-Nuts told them he would pay their legal bills, if they would wait until after the election to pass out the pink slips. This is cruel to the workers! This is only the tip of the iceberg.
Jay-Z's buddy [Yo'mama-Bama] is a pathological liar. Check out his B.S. and you will see. Anyone stupid enough to vote for this incompetent nerd, deserves what they ARE going to get! You think it's bad now, just wait!
Okay, the lack of understanding here is spectacular!
The number of unemployed vets is a percentage of the number of vets in total, which is only a small number of the overall number of people in the potential workforce. You can't simply add the 2 percentages together! In reality, if you want to add the number of unemployed vets (and I found the number of vets in 2010 as being 21.8m, and that seems pretty high), you would be increasing the total unemployment rate by about 1% because you're adding about 1.8m more people to the 12.1m that are already being counted.
And that's without going into the fact that there is no reason for them not to be included already anyway!
BO 2012, you are simply not being totally honest. The facts you present only that you can do a reasonable search of data and what you have presented mearly represents what you believe to be the truth in your own mind which on the surface may be true but you need to dig much deeper rather than the figment of your imagination. Also you are not being totally honest, as you may recall, Mr Reid, the Senate Leader (since 2007) stated that he would not allow any bills of a controversial nature come forward for a floor vote that his fellow Democrats would have to defend during their reelction campaign. You see the electorate has become a whole lot smarter since the Health Care Act, better known as Obama Care...
On the surface, by title only, most of the bills you list seem like a worthy cause and would make one wonder why not vote for each. Also keep in mind some of the bills you listed were voted on and defeated prior to the 2010 elections when the Democrats had complete control of both houses of congress. So why aren't being truthful and asking why did a Democrat Congress defeat some of these. So this is the 1st falicy in your argument 2 ways, one saying the GOP controls congress, and the other the GOP is holding up all of this legislation which in untirely untrue as some of these bills are still sitting on Reids desk.
For those bills that were truly voted on defeated, you neede to dig deeper in your research as to why, which is usually because of some attachment unrelated to the original reason for the bill. Both sides do it and it is reprehensible, the unrelated attachments should be brought forward on their own merits to be more transparent vs. hiding something, they say it is because there is not enough time to consider everthing individually. They work less days than teachers (they are considered in session about 160 days a year give or take a few and teachers work about 180 on avg depending on school system), may be if they put in the days what the avg working stiff works which is approximately 261 days (not counting vacation and holidays), how ever I have digressed so back on topic...
Lets look at one of the bills you listed, Sep 12__S.3457____Veterans Jobs Corps Act, S.Amdt.2789, this was originally a bipartisan sponsored bill but the Republican sponsor with drew, why, and what was attached. This was a very short and to the point bill and made sense however there were totally unrelated attachments that were BS.. They are; Sec.7. 100% levy on pmt to Medicare providers and suppliers; Sce. 8. Research & Development program for Ultra Deep Water and Unconventional Natural Gas & Other Petroleum Resources; Sec. 9. Revocation or denial of Passport in case of certain unpaid taxes; Sec. 7345. Revocation or denial of passport in case of Certain tax delinquencies; Sec. 4. Authority to deny or revoke passport. Each one of these unrealted additons are just a few short lines but reason enough top cause concern. I highly suggest you take a look, here is the link . I am more familiar with htis one as a friend of mine and his son had this very same conversation on this very bill.
So in conclusion BO2012, you need to do complete research before you spout off on things that may appear one way on the surface but when you truly dig into the detail just may be totally different than what the media or either party wants you to believe... Become educated and you are going to have to do it yourself as the media and neither party is willing to be totally upfront but they can be at least a starting point to dig deeper....
That is your school lesson for the day now go out and play....
The criteria is the same as it was when the unemployment rate was 4.6% in 2006. At that time the 4 week average of new unemployment claims was over 300,000 and there were still lots of people that were unable to find work and were discouraged about ever finding any because many suitable jobs had been shipped overseas in preceding years. I expect you didn't give a toss about those people not being able to find jobs then!
By the way, my wife has been unemployed (although recently temping) and has just landed a job that means we will be better off than we were in 2008. Your doom and gloom scenario's don't apply to everyone, much as you would like them to!!!!!!!!!!!!
The TRUTH is the numbers do not accurately reflect true joblessness, but this administration uses the same measure as those before it, so if you don't think believe the rate, then essential you can't believe the rate of any past administration either.
It's called a filibuster.
114,000 jobs does NOT reduce the unemployment rate from 8.1 % to 7.8 %.
More spin to make Mr. Campaigner-in-Chief look good since he "bombed out" during the Presidential debate.
Then it's a good thing that it's not just 114,000 jobs that the reduction is being accredited to!
Pajamo-Being president when a U.S. adversary is killed shows "leadership"... gee if only Bush had done that... what happened to Saddam Hussein AND HIS SONS by the way? Bush must have been 3 x the leader as B.O.
Maybe you don't think getting the man that ordered 9/11 killing almost 3,000 Americans on our own soil,is a "bit" more important than Saddam. But I and most Americans do.
Personally speaking, when I don't understand how something works, I try to refrain from making stupid statements... ;)
QE is going on all around the world and the schemes they are using is literally bizarro economics or as the banksters like to call it serving the people and doing God’s work!
QE in Europe’s latest scheme represents how the ECB can monetise the debt of “at risk” countries using
capitalthe printing press, while allowing the ECB to control inflation and the size of the money supply. In short, it appears to allow the eurozone to pay its debts with printed money and then remove it from the system at a later date – in other words the eurozone can pay its bills…then burn the money it used to pay them with. The system in principle at least allows for the payment of interest on “at risk” nation debt ( therefore controlling yield rates) and allows for the repayment of the principle capital on existing bonds.
The viability of the ECBs balance sheet is a nonsense, as under this system it can guarantee repayment of both yields and principles on all the bonds it buys so it doesn’t have to classify them as liabilities. And once it’s been repaid with its own printed money it can remove it from the system. Bizarro economics folks!
It can effectively recapitalise the banks, recapitalise “at risk” nations, and ensure that currently stable nations stay that way….all the while ensuring that cuts the Germans want are made with little risk other than to the
peasantspopulation. And as we know already, the population doesn’t count in their calculations.
The true goal of QE Infinity is to unwind the toxic mortgage debacle in a way that won’t bankrupt pensioners.
Who’s gone to prison?
Will you?
Please tell me how is it they are saying the 114K jobs is the best jobs gain in 9 years????? last year we had several with more than 200K????
Watch the Repugs SPIN that!
The term is Repukebicans.
there's nothing to spin, 114,000(jobs added) - 125,000(jobs needed per month) DOES NOT EQUAL a drop in the unemployment rate of 0.3%.
Did you miss the part abou the revision to the two prior months? So let's do the math. 114+86 = 200 !
How many did you say we need? 125?
Hint, 200 is bigger than 114.
wow, how about you Libtards, kool-aid drinks, oh wait who won the first debate and who couldnt even look someone in the eyes when he was being talked too. who's base made excuses for him losing, wow, yeah keep it up libtards, support your king but guess what, you will see a loss on nov 6
I'll take a person of substance over an etch-a-sketch bully any day.
I find it amusing, Republicans cum all over themselves thinking Romney won the debate, and he did until the fact checkers nailed him. Lies from beginning to end. Now they are rooting against the job numbers because it threatens them some way. I sure wish the republicans would just STFU and leave.
Clarkson what have you been drinking? The poll numbers have have gone up one more percentage point for the President. You know what, If I had been standing on that stage I would of been in shock too. Romney is the biggest flip flopper I have ever seen. Every position he had prior to the debate he did a 180 on. This is aman that you can trust? If so you are demented.
@ John in BC...You libtards are just pissed that your "Messiah" choked during the debates. Your libtard media didn't waste anytime spining and fabricating excuses to why Obama sucked!!! Fact checkers my @$$. You might want to watch some real news next time. Maybe the Democrats are the ones who should STFU!!! You d@mn tool!
Splendid. Now all Obama needs to do is get it down to 7.2% and he can tie Jimmy Carter.
notrocketscience, I am sooooooooo glad you aren't a rocket scientist. your math is atrocious. We need 125,000 jobs PER month to keep the unemployment at its current level. so that means if you take and add september and august together, 114+86=200 you ALSO need to add the expected/needed rate from both months, so 125+125=250. Hint: 200<250. We only received 80% of the needed jobs.
The job scenario will be further helped as the oldest Baby Boomers begin to retire (I know some - one was 71!)
Mackster, ah at it again. You libtards will stop at nothing to bow before your communist leader. Keeps smiling for it won't last long. Just remember one thing he phucked over you too. He wants all you libtards to vote for him again so he and that phucking George Sorry a$$ can take over the world. So all you mindless fanatical incompetent narcissist pieces of dog dung vote for him. Life is short and will be shorter if this fool porch monkey is re-elected. I,m OUT.
Lie a minute and you endorse it. What a guy Travis. I hope you have an accident and are paralyzed. Then you will find out what republicans really stand for.
Ryan, did the economy also shed 2.6 million jobs the year before Carter came into office?
LOL! because the election is determined by a single debate. Dolt.
Ryan: That is actually pretty good numbers considering that Reagan averaged 7.9% unemployment. It turns out Carter wasn't so bad after all.
Carter also paid down on the national debt, something that Reagan could not do.
Is anyone surprised at this news......It was so predictable that this was coming.....gotta get it below 8 spin those numbers!!! As Obama said in the debate...the numbers just don't add up.....It's a lie just like Obama.......
I thought it was Romney who lied at the debate. He flip flops so much, that he doesn't know if he's coming or going. Now he wants to attack big bird. What has big bird done to anyone?
do the math MR President . does not add up ..
Here's the math.
Did you miss the part abou the revision to the two prior months? So let's do the math. 114+86 = 200 !
That's 200k extra jobs!
I wonder if there are any "seasonal adjustments". With the Christmas hiring at WalMart and Target, there should have been quite a few jobs added.
notrocketscience-503001...(#7.3)..."Did you miss the part abou the revision to the two prior months? So let's do the math. 114+86 = 200 !"
So what you are saying is that the Labor Department made huge errors the last two months and now all of a sudden found those mistakes, we're supposed to believe they got it right this month....just in time for the election ???
Mike in Delray this is not errors on the BLS but adjustments to late reporting by the States. It happens all the time. There are always adjustments to past posts. Learn a little more about how they gather this data.
@magabuck
"Now he wants to attack big bird. What has big bird done to anyone?"
I think the REAL question here is, "What does HE want to do TO Big Bird?" What RoMONEY actually said at the debate the other night was, "I love Big Bird" which honestly explains A LOT. I don't think the "Big Bird" he was referring to was the beloved Sesame Street character, if ya' know what I mean! ;) This confirms what I have always suspected -- that Willard is fruity in the booty. What else would you expect from a man who wears "magic underwear"???
.
I have been saying it for months now that the unemployment rate would magically come down under 8% for the September jobs report and wallah! it did. Praise be to Obama! How did he do it?! Wow what a leader! Guess what? I predict that the October jobs report that comes out the day before the election will drop even further to 7.6% Wow! Just watch and see how psychic I am. Can you say tahdah! and presto-chango the economy has been "saved"?! Praise be to Obama! I hope you can see the sarcasm dripping from my post!
hmm funny that when I was watching my local news at 6:00 this morning they were saying the rate was 8.2% and now, almost 3 hours later, it has dropped to 7.8%???? Me thinks someone is monkeying around with the numbers.....naw it's election time now why would ANYONE do that?
ROMNEY/RYAN 2012-2016 FOR AMERICA!
So they just magically found that they had errors from July and August hmmm right before election time......seems pretty convinent to me.
That is odd, Sheryl, as our news has consistently been reporting the lower number. Maybe question your local yokels.
Obama 2012, NO GOP votes this year.
People do any of you really understand how the number works. Self employed people cannot jump up by 200,000 that means those people are being paid from a straight commission job because their benefits ran out. Do you understand once you reach 30 days of unemployment you are not counted anymore. You can receive benefits but you are not consider unemployed anymore. Go in your neighborhood ask your friends and be truthful how many of you know people that have been unemployed for more than 6 months. the number is not a true number so all this excitement is not real.
Nothing suspicious here you silly republicans. So what if it was the largest single drop in the unemployment numbers in 30 years, so what if it happened two days after your republican candidate gave the worst beat down in history to our wonder child. There is absolutely nothing suspicious here. duh
Funny how MSNBC left out the part where the ACCURATE and TRUSTED report shows hiring SLOWING;
P.S.
I give credit for MSNBC at least admitting that the other report is worthless... even if their brain-dead sheep audience would rather be lied to than hear the truth;
"The unemployment report is based on the so-called Household Survey and it measures the number of unemployed as a percentage of the labor force. It is notoriously volatile and economists don’t put much stock in it,"
My local yokels? LOL wow you have such a way with words. Typical coming from liberal, all you can manage to do is call people names, childish ones at that.
Roger,
Seasonal hiring isn't part of these numbers-this is from August and September. Stores are planning to hire seasonally, but that hiring didn't happen in Aug and Sept.
So, even though the BLS has been reporting the same numbers in pretty much the same way (they do make slight adjustments in their calculations from time to time, but always factor that in so that we are comparing apples to apples), now, because the numbers help Obama, they are made up and untrustworthy? But when these same numbers were helping W back in 2004, the numbers were golden? The numbers are what they are. Will they be adjusted next month, of course, they always are. Righties, just admit that, regardless of how the economy is doing, you want to go back to the more tax breaks for the rich, more war for the poor - policies of W. And back to a 'deficits don't matter' attitude. Guess what, I am a liberal, guess what, I can admit that Obama sucked in the debate. Why can't you righties admit to actual facts when they are right in front of you? We know it won't cause you to change your mind, but at least admit to the truth.
The BLS no longer considers as “unemployed” those workers without jobs who have not looked for work in the past year because they feel no jobs are available.
The only measure BLS reports to the public as the official monthly unemployment rate is the seasonally adjusted U3 number.
The official SGS Alternative Unemployment Rate shows unemployment in January 2012 was 22.5 percent, a 0.1 percent increase over December 2011, whereas the BLS figures were designed to report a .8-point decline, from a seasonally adjusted U3 rate of 9.1 percent in January 2011 to a seasonally adjusted 8.3 percent rate in January 2012.
If the size of the U.S. labor force as a share of the total population was the same as it was when Barack Obama took office—65.7% then vs. 63.9% today—the U-3 unemployment rate would be 10.8%.
But what if you take into the account the aging of the Baby Boomers, which means the labor force participation (LFP) rate should be trending lower. Indeed, it has been doing just that since 2000. Before the Great Recession, the Congressional Budget Office predicted what the LFP would be in 2012, assuming such demographic changes. Using that number, the real unemployment rate would be 10.4%.
The broader, U-6 measure of unemployment which includes the discouraged plus part-timers who wish they had full time work. That unemployment rate, perhaps the truest measure of the labor market’s health, is still a sky-high 14.9%.
Based on the stats below, it can still be 8.0 rather than 7.8, the interesting thing is that these are not the actual unemployment numbers anyway.
“The unemployment rate declined by 0.3 percentage point to 7.8 percent in September.
For the first 8 months of the year, the rate held within a narrow range of 8.1
and 8.3 percent. The number of unemployed persons, at 12.1 million, decreased by
456,000 in September.”

Yes I am wanting someone to explain this bs instead of spinning for political gain. We cannot even keep up with those entering the work force, yet there is a drop in the percentage of unemployed.
This number does not include the long term unemployed i.e. people who no longer can collect unemployment benefits.
The real indicator is the number of Americans who are working which continues on an downward path
Labor Department, after their annual review added 386,000 jobs in September. In case you missed it.
Rick, you obviously have an internet connection, google it! Here is the detailed report from BLS if you really want to check their math...
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/empsit.pdf
Hey! Abbott...
COSTELLO: I want to talk about the unemployment rate in America.
ABBOTT: Good Subject. Terrible Times. It’s 9%.
COSTELLO: That many people are out of work?
ABBOTT: No, that’s 16%.
COSTELLO: You just said 9%.
ABBOTT: 9% Unemployed.
COSTELLO: Right 9% out of work.
ABBOTT: No, that’s 16%.
COSTELLO: Okay, so it’s 16% unemployed.
ABBOTT: No, that’s 9%…
COSTELLO: WAIT A MINUTE. Is it 9% or 16%?
ABBOTT: 9% are unemployed. 16% are out of work.
COSTELLO: IF you are out of work you are unemployed.
ABBOTT: No, Obama said you can’t count the “Out of Work” as the unemployed.
You have to look for work to be unemployed.
COSTELLO: BUT THEY ARE OUT OF WORK!!!
ABBOTT: No, you miss his point.
COSTELLO: What point?
ABBOTT: Someone who doesn’t look for work, can’t be counted with those who look for work. It wouldn’t be fair.
COSTELLO: To whom?
ABBOTT: The unemployed.
COSTELLO: But they are ALL out of work.
ABBOTT: No, the unemployed are actively looking for work. Those who are out of work gave up looking and if you give up, you are no longer in the ranks of the unemployed.
COSTELLO: So if you’re off the unemployment roles, that would count as less unemployment?
ABBOTT: Unemployment would go down. Absolutely!
COSTELLO: The unemployment just goes down because you don’t look for work?
ABBOTT: Absolutely it goes down. That’s how Obama gets it to 9%.
Otherwise it would be 16%. He doesn’t want you to read about 16% unemployment.
COSTELLO: That would be tough on his reelection.
ABBOTT: Absolutely.
COSTELLO: Wait, I got a question for you. That means there are two ways to bring down the unemployment number?
ABBOTT: Two ways is correct.
COSTELLO: Unemployment can go down if someone gets a job?
ABBOTT: Correct.
COSTELLO: And unemployment can also go down if you stop looking for a job?
ABBOTT: Bingo.
COSTELLO: So there are two ways to bring unemployment down, and the easier of the two is to have Obama's supporters stop looking for work.
ABBOTT: Now you’re thinking like the Obama Economy Czar.
COSTELLO: I don’t even know what the hell I just said!
ABBOTT: Now you’re thinking like Obama.
About two weeks ago, the jobs numbers were adjusted upwards for July and August. The new rate is now reported. I can't tell you in detail why there was a lag but can factually say that ADP reported new hires much higher last month then the jobs reports so the adjustment makes sense.
My my my......
Look at all of the party over country republicons complaining because the economy is getting better.
Why do republicons want America to fail?
the only thing that has actually dropped are the libs pants as to take a crap. that is a true statement. these numbers don't add up and i am not going to read the crap that the BLS for two months held back, lost then found, wrong tally, just sent in from the states, or whatever other marlarky that the BLS gives. 2+2 does not equal 5.
@rocky. I have to give you an A++++ for your analogy. Loved it, but there are a lot of zerO's that wouldn't understand. If you get my drift.
rocky-2318920, absolutely the best post this week by far! There's no point in reading any further. Have a nice weekend!
The methods used by the BLS to calculate the unemployment rate have not changed in DECADES. If the figure is overly optimistic, then it has been all along. Therefore, it is a perfectly relevant gauge.
Put the petty partisan point scoring aside and cheer up, this is GOOD news!
I am not shocked. The media has to put out some good headlines after Wed. I really wish we could get true numbers for once. I know, it is to much to ask.
So you wish the numbers would be bad? You don't want a recovery? When there is good news, the administration or medias are probably lying. When there is bad news, numbers are correct and you guys rejoice with LMAOs, ROFLs and HAHAHAHAs and a couple of TOLD YOU SO!
NO...just truthful....You do undersand that do You not???
I am saying, what perfect timing! No I am not buying it. I can see what is really going on here. I would love to see everyone working, but the fact is, many have given up even looking. I am a realist, I don't live in utopia land.
What is truthful to you guys? 12? 15? 30%? We live in a small town on the east coast, as red as it can be. Constructions are back on track, we see help wanted signs here and there, kids having less problem finding small jobs, it's not great but it sure as heck better than it was last year but you go right ahead and keep that pessimistic attitude up, it'll do us all good!
Nope, just not good enough for the teapugs or whatever their problem is adjusting their blinders. There are those that would be ok with our economy tanking if they could just get an American Taliban in political power. Sad.
NO GOP votes in 2012.
There are 914,000 more Americans working today than there were in January 2009.
miklkit: And there are STILL 23 million people unemployed and 49 million people on food stamps. So what's your point.
pdrafter: The reason people are so outraged is because they know the media and government are not telling the whole truth about unemployment for political reasons. There are STILL 23 million people unemployed. This is mean-spirited and a cruel joke to all the people who are struggling and all the people who have fallen into poverty and all the people now on food stamps and welfare. It's MEAN.
Believe'nAmerica, the Bureau of Labor Statistics work without any input or supervision from the White House. It has been this way under many presidents. Keith Hall, a former commissioner for the BLS, appointed by GWB has said that the numbers are trustworthy and they are impossible to manipulate.
After that terrible debate performance, this is the shot in the arm the Obama campaign needs. Still a long way off to fixing the economy but it will help the conversation.
Exactly why you never hear this worthless report mentioned in the news at any other time.
"The unemployment report is based on the so-called Household Survey and it measures the number of unemployed as a percentage of the labor force. It is notoriously volatile and economists don’t put much stock in it, even though it often becomes the talking point for non-economists, politicians and pundits"
The real report shows that hiring is slowing:
"A separate survey of employers, considered the key metric that Wall Street watches, showed businesses added 114,000 jobs in September. It marked a slowdown in hiring, after July and August were revised significantly higher.
Those revisions added 86,000 more jobs than originally reported in the summer."
http://money.cnn.com/2012/10/05/news/economy/september-jobs-report/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
P.S.
Next they will try to "revise" Obama's debate performance by splicing in clips of him not being an empty suit.
Romney had 1 good day and it turns out everything he said was a complete lie. Don't worry, he'll step in it again real soon. Today he's flip flopped on doubling down on how he hates 47% of the country.
Obama/Biden 2012
Oh? Show us the lies. Bring proof.
If Romney lied, why did not Obama challenge him?
Obama did challenge Robme on his lies and Robme came back with more lies.
Example: Obama mentioned the law that gives tax cuts to corporations that export American jobs and how Bain took advantage of it to make more money. Bain under Robme was a pioneer of outsourcing jobs.
Robme came back by loudly saying that in 25 years of business experience he had never heard of such a law. That steaming pile of Mitt lied.
The Democrats have tried to repeal that law twice. First in 2010 and again just last July. You republicons filibustered them both times.
Why do republicons hate America so much?
Here is a complete list of your chief liar.
Pundits from both sides of the aisle have lauded Mitt Romney’s strong debate performance, praising his preparedness and ability to challenge President Obama’s policies and accomplishments. But Romney only accomplished this goal by repeatedly misleading viewers. He spoke for 38 minutes of the 90 minute debate and told at least 27 myths:
1) “[G]et us energy independent, North American energy independent. That creates about 4 million jobs”. Romney’s plan for “energy independence” actually relies heavily on a study that assumes the U.S. continues with fuel efficiency standards set by the Obama administration. For instance, he uses Citigroup research based off the assumption that “‘the United States will continue with strict fuel economy standards that will lower its oil demand.” Since he promises to undo the Obama administration’s new fuel efficiency standards, he would cut oil consumption savings of 2 million barrels per day by 2025.
2) “I don’t have a $5 trillion tax cut. I don’t have a tax cut of a scale that you’re talking about.” A Tax Policy Center analysis of Romney’s proposal for a 20 percent across-the-board tax cut in all federal income tax rates, eliminating the Alternative Minimum Tax, eliminating the estate tax and other tax reductions, would reduce federal revenue $480 billion in 2015. This amounts to $5 trillion over the decade.
3) “My view is that we ought to provide tax relief to people in the middle class. But I’m not going to reduce the share of taxes paid by high-income people.” If Romney hopes to provide tax relief to the middle class, then his $5 trillion tax cut would add to the deficit. There are not enough deductions in the tax code that primarily benefit rich people to make his math work.
4) “My — my number-one principal is, there will be no tax cut that adds to the deficit. I want to underline that: no tax cut that adds to the deficit.” As the Tax Policy Center concluded, Romney’s plan can’t both exempt middle class families from tax cuts and remain revenue neutral. “He’s promised all these things and he can’t do them all. In order for him to cover the cost of his tax cut without adding to the deficit, he’d have to find a way to raise taxes on middle income people or people making less than $200,000 a year,” the Center found.
5) “I will not under any circumstances raise taxes on middle-income families. I will lower taxes on middle-income families. Now, you cite a study. There are six other studies that looked at the study you describe and say it’s completely wrong.” The studies Romney cites actually further prove that Romney would, in fact, have to raise taxes on the middle class if he were to keep his promise not to lose revenue with his tax rate reduction.
6) “I saw a study that came out today that said you’re going to raise taxes by $3,000 to $4,000 on middle-income families.” Romney is pointing to this study from the American Enterprise Institute. It actually found that rather than raise taxes to pay down the debt, the Obama administration’s policies — those contained directly in his budget — would reduce the share of taxes that go toward servicing the debt by $1,289.89 per taxpayer in the $100,000 to $200,000 range.
7) “And the reason is because small business pays that individual rate; 54 percent of America’s workers work in businesses that are taxed not at the corporate tax rate, but at the individual tax rate….97 percent of the businesses are not — not taxed at the 35 percent tax rate, they’re taxed at a lower rate. But those businesses that are in the last 3 percent of businesses happen to employ half — half of all the people who work in small business.” Far less than half of the people affected by the expiration of the upper income tax cuts get any of their income at all from a small businesses. And those people could very well be receiving speaking fees or book royalties, which qualify as “small business income” but don’t have a direct impact on job creation. It’s actually hard to find a small business who think that they will be hurt if the marginal tax rate on income earned above $250,000 per year is increased.
8) “Mr. President, all of the increase in natural gas and oil has happened on private land, not on government land. On government land, your administration has cut the number of permits and licenses in half.” Oil production from federal lands is higher, not lower: Production from federal lands is up slightly in 2011 when compared to 2007. And the oil and gas industry is sitting on 7,000 approved permits to drill, that it hasn’t begun exploring or developing.
9) “The president’s put it in place as much public debt — almost as much debt held by the public as all prior presidents combined.” This is not even close to being true. When Obama took office, the national debt stood at $10.626 trillion. Now the national debt is over $16 trillion. That $5.374 trillion increase is nowhere near as much debt as all the other presidents combined.
10) “That’s why the National Federation of Independent Businesses said your plan will kill 700,000 jobs. I don’t want to kill jobs in this environment.” That study, produced by a right-wing advocacy organization, doesn’t analyze what Obama has actually proposed.
11) “What we do have right now is a setting where I’d like to bring money from overseas back to this country.” Romney’s plan to shift the country to a territorial tax system would allow corporations to do business and make profits overseas without ever being taxed on it in the United States. This encourages American companies to invest abroad and could cost the country up to 800,000 jobs.
12) “I would like to take the Medicaid dollars that go to states and say to a state, you’re going to get what you got last year, plus inflation, plus 1 percent, and then you’re going to manage your care for your poor in the way you think best.” Sending federal Medicaid funding to the states in the form of a block grant woud significantly reduce federal spending for Medicaid because the grant would not keep up with projected health care costs. A CBO estimate of a very similar proposal from Paul Ryan found that federal spending would be “35 percent lower in 2022 and 49 percent lower in 2030 than current projected federal spending” and as a result “states would face significant challenges in achieving sufficient cost savings through efficiencies to mitigate the loss of federal funding.” “To maintain current service levels in the Medicaid program, states would probably need to consider additional changes, such as reducing their spending on other programs or raising additional revenues,” the CBO found.
13) “I want to take that $716 billion you’ve cut and put it back into Medicare…. But the idea of cutting $716 billion from Medicare to be able to balance the additional cost of Obamacare is, in my opinion, a mistake. There’s that number again. Romney is claiming that Obamacare siphons off $716 billion from Medicare, to the detriment of beneficiaries. In actuality, that money is saved primarily through reducing over-payments to insurance companies under Medicare Advantage, not payments to beneficiaries. Paul Ryan’s budget plan keeps those same cuts, but directs them toward tax cuts for the rich and deficit reduction.
14) “What I support is no change for current retirees and near-retirees to Medicare.” Here is how Romney’s Medicare plan will affect current seniors: 1) by repealing Obamacare, the 16 million seniors receiving preventive benefits without deductibles or co-pays and are saving $3.9 billion on prescription drugs will see a cost increase, 2) “premium support” will increase premiums for existing beneficiaries as private insurers lure healthier seniors out of the traditional Medicare program, 3) Romney/Ryan would also lower Medicaid spending significantly beginning next year, shifting federal spending to states and beneficiaries, and increasing costs for the 9 million Medicare recipients who are dependent on Medicaid.
15) “Number two is for people coming along that are young, what I do to make sure that we can keep Medicare in place for them is to allow them either to choose the current Medicare program or a private plan. Their choice. They get to choose — and they’ll have at least two plans that will be entirely at no cost to them.” The Medicare program changes for everyone, even people who choose to remain in the traditional fee-for-service. Rather than relying on a guaranteed benefit, all beneficiaries will receive a premium support credit of $7,500 on average in 2023 to purchase coverage in traditional Medicare or private insurance. But that amount will only grow at a rate of GDP plus 1.5 percentage points and will not keep up with health care costs. So while the federal government will spend less on the program, seniors will pay more in premiums.
16) “And, by the way the idea came not even from Paul Ryan or — or Senator Wyden, who’s the co-author of the bill with — with Paul Ryan in the Senate, but also it came from Bill — Bill Clinton’s chief of staff.” Romney has rejected the Ryan/Wyden approach — which does not cap the growth of the “premium support” subsidy. Bill Clinton and his commission also voted down these changes to the Medicare program.
17) “Well, I would repeal and replace it. We’re not going to get rid of all regulation. You have to have regulation. And there are some parts of Dodd-Frank that make all the sense in the world.” Romney has previously called for full repeal of Dodd-Frank, a law whose specific purpose is to regulate banks. MF Global’s use of customer funds to pay for its own trading losses is just one bit of proof that the financial industry isn’t responsible enough to protect consumers without regulation.
18) “But I wouldn’t designate five banks as too big to fail and give them a blank check. That’s one of the unintended consequences of Dodd-Frank… We need to get rid of that provision because it’s killing regional and small banks. They’re getting hurt.” The law merely says that the biggest, systemically risky banks need to abide by more stringent regulations. If those banks fail, they will be unwound by a new process in the Dodd-Frank law that protects taxpayers from having to pony up for a bailout.
19) “And, unfortunately, when — when — when you look at Obamacare, the Congressional Budget Office has said it will cost $2,500 a year more than traditional insurance. So it’s adding to cost.” Obamacare will actually provide millions of families with tax credits to make health care more affordable.
20) “[I]t puts in place an unelected board that’s going to tell people ultimately what kind of treatments they can have. I don’t like that idea.” The Board, or IPAB is tasked with making binding recommendations to Congress for lowering health care spending, should Medicare costs exceed a target growth rate. Congress can accept the savings proposal or implement its own ideas through a super majority. The panel’s plan will modify payments to providers but it cannot “include any recommendation to ration health care, raise revenues or Medicare beneficiary premiums…increase Medicare beneficiary cost-sharing (including deductibles, coinsurance, and co- payments), or otherwise restrict benefits or modify eligibility criteria” (Section 3403 of the ACA). Relying on health care experts rather than politicians to control health care costs has previously attracted bipartisan support and even Ryan himself proposed two IPAB-like structures in a 2009 health plan.
21) “Right now, the CBO says up to 20 million people will lose their insurance as Obamacare goes into effect next year. And likewise, a study by McKinsey and Company of American businesses said 30 percent of them are anticipating dropping people from coverage.” The Affordable Care Act would actually expand health care coverage to 30 million Americans, despite Romney fear mongering. According to CBO director Douglas Elmendorf, 3 million or less people would leave employer-sponsored health insurance coverage as a result of the law.
22) “I like the way we did it [health care] in Massachusetts…What were some differences? We didn’t raise taxes.” Romney raised fees, but he can claim that he didn’t increase taxes because the federal government funded almost half of his reforms.
23) “It’s why Republicans said, do not do this, and the Republicans had — had the plan. They put a plan out. They put out a plan, a bipartisan plan. It was swept aside.” The Affordable Care Act incorporates many Republican ideas including the individual mandate, state-based health care exchanges, high-risk insurance pools, and modified provisions that allow insurers to sell policies in multiple states. Republicans never offered a united bipartisan alternative.
24) “Preexisting conditions are covered under my plan.” Only people who are continuously insured would not be discriminated against because they suffer from pre-existing conditions. This protection would not be extended to people who are currently uninsured.
25) “In one year, you provided $90 billion in breaks to the green energy world. Now, I like green energy as well, but that’s about 50 years’ worth of what oil and gas receives.” The $90 billion was given out over several years and included loans, loan guarantees and grants through the American Recovery Act. $23 billion of the $90 billion “went toward “clean coal,” energy-efficiency upgrades, updating the electricity grid and environmental clean-up, largely for old nuclear weapons sites.”
26) “I think about half of [the green firms Obama invested in], of the ones have been invested in have gone out of business. A number of them happened to be owned by people who were contributors to your campaigns.” As of late last year, only “three out of the 26 recipients of 1705 loan guarantees have filed for bankruptcy, with losses estimated at just over $600 million.”
27) “If the president’s reelected you’ll see dramatic cuts to our military.” Romney is referring to the sequester, which his running mate Paul Ryan supported. Obama opposes the military cuts and has asked Congress to formulate a balanced approach that would avoid the trigger.
Update
Romney has now admitted that number 26 was not true.
NC,
Seriously, haven't you been paying attention the last couple of days? Practically all of Romney's main points were lies or huge misrepresentations.

It's hysterical to watch all the crowing over the "Win" at the debate while at the same time watching the Romney campaign walk back pretty much all of what he said.
Shellie: Romney hasn't walked back anything he's said. It's only you and the Obama campaign who has said this. Try to distinguish when it's said by Obama and not Romney. Just because Obama says it doesn't make it truth.
There they are !.....sorry boys.....THE MYTH IS HISTORY
O&JOE 2012
Myth is right, you said it...
More like Meth
Mackster, here we go again. Open mouth insert foot. Open mouth $hit comes out. Come down young man (idiot), November is coming. Romney-Ryan 2012= Odumba$$ and Joe Biteme are done. Mack you're an A$$.
Look, if you think our unemployment rate dropped from 8.2% to 7.6% in one month, I have some nice oceanfront (swamp) land to sell you in Florida. It takes 250,000 new jobs per month to cause the unemployment rate to drop. 114,000 just doesn't cut it. The fact of the matter is many are now off of unemployment benefits, but still unemployed. Unemployment is calculated differently today than it was during the Carter administration when it was over 7%. If was calculated the same way it was then, it would be over 11% today, so don't let this article fool you.
It was the Democrats' policies, starting the CRA (Community Reinvestment Act) that got us into this fix. Granted the wars didn't help, but Afghanistan was unavoidable, and in the Iraq war everyone had bad information that Bush and most of the Democrat Congressmen relied on and made the decision to go to war with them.
Actually, my brother in FL is cashing in his now high stocks so that he can invest in real estate there.
The funny thing is, even with his government job and his investing plans - he still likes Mitt.
None is so blind as he who will not see.
NO GOP votes 2012.
(sarc font engaged) What great news! The workforce must have shrunk again!
(normal font) Otherwise, the numbers just don't add up....
Sorry simple arithmetic escapes you. Look at the adjusted numbers. 2+2 = 4
Mike: I'm glad those math addition flashcards finally worked for you. Otherwise your comment is so puerile it almost defies reason. Read the actual report ( ) There's a lot more behind those numbers than the rosy scenario the left is trumpeting. Excerpts from that report are found below.
"Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (7.3 percent),
adult women (7.0 percent), and whites (7.0 percent) declined over the month.
The unemployment rates for teenagers (23.7 percent), blacks (13.4 percent), and
Hispanics (9.9 percent) were little changed."
"Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 114,000 in September. In 2012,
employment growth has averaged 146,000 per month, compared with an average
monthly gain of 153,000 in 2011."
The above two paragraphs, expecially the "nonfarm payroll" paragraph, are why we're calling BS on this.
They cut out my link. here it is:

I am a degree'd engineer who used to be able to do differential equations in my head. Do you even know what a differential equation is? Keep your condescending yammering to yourself.
With retroactively applied corrections to previous months - the unemployment rate dropped to below 8%.
I offer no apologies to you. Your math comment was the condescending one ("2+2=4"). You got what was coming to you. BTW: I speak six languages and am a professor of languages and history. Good for you if you can do differential equations in your head. I still call BS on this.
If you bothered to read the actual report, 50,000 of those "jobs" were government jobs--just what we need!
I have been waiting for this headline showing unemployment below 8%. The liberal media is sooooo predictable.
What does the liberal media have to do with this. It's being reported by Foxnews also. GOPers blaming the media for everything is hilarious. Just like pollsters are skewing the polls. HAHAHA!!!
If You were as smart as You think You are You would have know that most most people with an IQs over 47 predicted this to happen monts ago...This government is only fooling those they have fooled for generations.
Fox does report the facts! But demi's only agree with fox when in their favor!
Too bad you're hoping the economy won't get better - just goes to show that President Obama is leading this nation out of the greatest recession ever. Why would anyone want to go back to the policies that got us into this mess by voting for Romney.
Obama/Biden 2012
here's fox READ the whole article and go from there.
Nice math, you pukes. No rational person believes this non-sense. 900k jobs the month before the election? Puuuuuuuuuu-llllleeeassee
America Woke up. R&R 2012
Anther FOX news MORON, so if you watch FOX your Not Rational just a other repub looser
Anther FOX news MORON, so if you watch FOX your Not Rational just a other repub looser
Hey go check out the latest headline on FOX. Even they say the unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent. Conspiracy? From the infamous right-wing station? GOP, lets hear your argument.
Donny use Your brain...thats spelled BRAIN not brane...but a good try.
Cooking the books, only 114,000 jobs added and rate goes down...
Obama defies gravity....
OBAMA LIES
1. If I'm elected, I will cut the deficit in half.
2. If you pass my stimulus package, unemployement will not go above 5%
3. If I don't get the job done in 3.5 years, I'm a 1 term President. (still has time to get this one right)
and Mittens tell the True, what planet are you from MORON
4. Mitch McConnell - My number one job is to make sure President Obama is a one term President.
5. Republican Congress - Do nothing to help the economy.
You right wingers need to STOP. President is not a LIAR. But Unfit Mitt and Lyin Ryan are. If you put your thinkers cap on and think about the 8 years Unfit Mitt has been running, every issue he has change his mind. Which is telling me that his mental state is not there. He twist and turns on everything. Wonder about the security of our great country, with a mind like Romney he will start and War and than try to change his mind. His adviser are Bush admin., and they love war. He seems like he has problems and those problems we don't need. Romney is a CEO he can sale but this is not a board room. Looks like he has closed some of you with his BS. It is want it is 7.8%.
repubvomit congress the least bills passed since world war 2.
The worst congress in history.
How can anyone work with them if they don't want to work?
If the President will not vote for tax cuts which will BLOW UP the debt we will not work with him. As a matter of fact we will not work with him no matter what.
This is why the American people must vote out the crazies in both houses.
Does anyone believe that the world's leaders will believe or trust anything Mitt Romney says?
Make That 3 houses....do no forget the White House.
ir-12, WAKE UP! The foreign leaders love Obama's weakness!!! NO PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES BOWS TO FOREIGN LEADERS!!!!
Well, really, Obama has not cut the deficit in half. In fact (according to usdebtclock.org and keen observation) since the dem. convention when the deficit crossed $16 trillion, the debt have increased almost $150 billion.
Since the stimulus the unemployment rate has come nowhere near 5%. Maybe the next report will show it.
My rides = liar. Funny that you have to post lies because you're so sad that the economy is getting better.
Obama/Biden 2012
You want to drag out bush/cheney the war criminals? They invaded the wrong country! Then they started torturing people. Then they just gave up and went back to trashing the economy.
Bush/cheney have the worst record on job creation on record.
my rides:that is going to be another oct surprise(debt cut by 6t) before r and o have the next debate. you will read it on MSNBC.
Have you ever heard such a pathetic, whiney lot of teat suckers in all your life? The teapus are the kind of people who if their kids were near starvation and the neighbor brought them a ham they would refuse it then turn around and wine and cry because there was no bread with it. If they won the lottery they would dismiss it then whine and bitch because they only got 10mil after taxes. Never have I heard a more whinny a$$ bunch of people who sit on their a$$es and moan and groan because things aren't being done FOR them or to their exact standards. If you ever wondered who the "entitlement" group was, you need look no further than the republicans.
Well, Good news for American, although the number of job created is not to even keep up with population growth. It's good for the Obama campaign and I think that Romney and the Republicans will do everything they can to spin that number.
Really great "the number of job created is not to even keep up with population growth" Yeah we need to hire that infant. How ridiculous.
7.8 well we are going in the right direction lololol Teabagger might not want to hear this!!
Great. But too bad most of those jobs went to illegal immigrants.
The ones that are allowed to stay so thats okay . lololololol
Great at this rate maybe in 10 or 15 years we might enough people working so we can work on our (by then) 30 trillion dollar debt........
Proof?
If the government gave everyone a job streetsweaping the Obama worshipers would be happy about 0.0% unemployment.
You betcha!
In the 1930s under the New Deal the economy grew at a 9% rate year after year. The Democrats modern version of the New Deal is sitting on Bohner's desk. Why are you against 9% growth?
Geez guys, can't you read the article? Its not just the number for this month, but the revised numbers for the last 2 months as well.
Thank you for pointing that out. At least someone read the full article.
Thats the problem with these right wing posters. They can't read, can't comprehend, and all they want to do is be negative. If they can not read this simple little article maybe our President needs to allot more $$$s to education in the Red states to bring up the literacy rate.
80,000 extra people employed over the past two months doesn't explain why the unemployment rate went down by a whole 0.3% when it takes 200,000 people a month increase in employable aged people. Adding 80k + 114k = 194k, meaning if anything the employment rate should have stayed the same. Some people may not be able to read, but maybe be able to do math instead.
They've already decided on the conclusion they want, so they simply ignore any facts that don't correspond. You have to hand it to Democrats; they fully admitted that Obama gave a bad debate performance. If Romney is terrible next time, I'm guessing Republicans will start blaming the media or polls or something.
Well it seems the right wing forgot to watch big bird when they were kids and get a head start on learn math.
Big Bird is a professor of ornithology.
Even with the "revised" numbers, this does not add up. The equation they use is not relevant and it sure does NOT illustrate how many Americans are out of work.
Romney wants to add $5 rillion to the national debt and balance the budget by firing Big Bird.
Government funding of PBS makes up 0.012% of the federal budget...............Do the math.
It's MATH and it don't add up.
You need to retake some math classes, RickGaffron.
No Kat, he doesn't
BTW: did anyone notice the number of government jobs in their figuring?
"Government payrolls rose 10,000 after increasing 45,000 in August."
As Ron White would say: "There's some good news..."
I was wondering wha tall the explosions were outside this morning, now I know. It was all the heads of the GOPers exploding.
no starbuck49. It was you big, stupid mouth. Obama moron!
I know that this is due at least in part to the Holiday Hiring Boom, but still thank God! I am happy for the families getting relief! :)
Yes lets be happy for all those illegals getting work instead of American citizens:( And it does seam funny this happens a month away from election, but then i noticed its from nbc news:( Another libtard station.
No Obama!
We are all happy for additional jobs, no matter how small. But, the headlines are as deceptive as Obama and Democrat Party. Unemployment "dropped". No it went down by .3 % 115,000 job created by temporary hiring of seasonal workers.
Again, everyone is happy when even 1 job is created but don't try to imply that Obama and Democrat policies had anything to do with it.
But if the numbers would have risen - thats OK right?
I really cant comprehend people cheering for high unemployment numbers. Do you people hate your fellow countrymen that much?
Christmas hiring in September?
Gail: Maybe you should be for prosecuting those who hire those illegals.
114000 for one month that don't even keep up with population growth. Your spinning.
Can you tell me what population growth has to do with unemployment?
Mike, that's easy. When people get old enough they try to get a job. Currently the USA has a growing population. It doesn't seem that hard to figure out to me.
Phil,
You're assuming a lot with that comment. What age is "old enough"? Who says all of these people are looking for work? If you're counting teen-agers, most are in school and may not, in fact, be looking, as you assume. It's an easy "one-liner" but means nothing without specificity and context. No matter what you naysayers continue to try to propogate, four years ago we were losing 500-800 THOUSAND jobs a month. You can't tell reasonable people things aren't improving!
Thats garbage. Ive been working since I was 12 and yet I have friends in their 30's who have never had a job. Try again.
Romney did That
Maybe just the thought of getting a businessman in the WH could help - - - and - - -I'm not for either candidate - - voted for Ron Paul in Primary!!!!
A businessman who lived off the ruining of people's lives in the WH? Yeah, makes a lot of sense, parkwaynenc.
Kat better than the community organizer who is so far over his head that the economy only has 1.2 gdp growth , more in poverty, 6 trillion debt, more on food stamps. Facts from a failed president obumma the biggest failure ever even worse than the loser carter
Yes. He took us from a $14 trillion dollar up-in-smoke GWB melt-down and double digit unemployment to a 7.8 percent unemployment rate. All while a republican congress has stymied every attempt to get the economy back on track. Not bad for a "Community Organizer."
I like how so many Repubs say the government shouldn't be providing social services for poor people, that should be left to churches and community organizations But, then, they speak with disdain about the position of a community organizer as if that is position holds no value to society.
Exactly JC - just think what could have been accomplished if the republicans in congress would have worked for America instead of their own sorry agenda. This is definitely good news for President Obama - he has accomplished a lot without any help from congress.
Obama/Biden 2012
Hoover was a businessman. He caused the Great Depression.
Bush was a businessman. His oil company could not find oil in Texas.
Cheney was a businessman. As CEO of Halliburton he sold nuclear technology to Iran starting in 1998.
Bush/cheney gave us the Great Recession.
There are now 914,000 more Americans working than there were in January 2009 when Obama was sworn into office.
JCN:you got to be kidding. would you like to re-read your post. no wait. i will bring out the fine points for you.
"he took us from a 14t dollar up in smoke GWB white house" you are telling me,(it is 17t) we now have only a 3t debt. How did obama accomplish this? 17t-14t=3t. math. right?
what happened to the 8,5% unemployed veteran. oh yeah. forgot BLS doesn't add them to the rolls. well I am right now. 8.5+7.8 =16.3% that is the real #'s.
"Happy Times Are Here Again" - - - NOT!!!
Right on cue, liberal media comes out for Obama. You can candy coat dog poop but it still stinks.
I'll believe the numbers when they approach millions of jobs created, anything less is just a fluctuation.
as usual the right wing clowns don't believe any good news period. i believe you want the number so high that this idiot romney will win. if the number of jobs created was three times what it was, you idiots would claim it's a lame stream media creation for obama. why don't you just admait your a rascist and go from there. by the way i'm a retiured white guy from chicago so i'm one of romney's 47%. also i'm a veteran who depends on the v.a. for my health care. i know you think i'm a lazy oaf but i did earn all of this and if the country gets ryan, romney i'm sure i'll be screwed.
WOMEN...PROTECT YOUR RIGHTS...OBAMA/BIDEN!!!
LOL - Republicans are not against women. Many Republicans are even women!
Racist? Really? You are going to play the race card where there has been no mention of race whatsoever? Tell me who the racist really is here. It's all you think about and it consumes you. Always looking for a chance to portray a conservative as a racist is all you dems have. You should be ashamed.
And for the record, I have been unemployed for two years now. I was never unemployed until the Obama administration came around. Am I part of the 47%? NO! Because I refuse to draw unemployment. I am not part of the problem, just a victim of Obama!
Also for the record, my father is a retired and disabled veteran who relies on the VA for his healthcare. So no, you get no sympathy from me on that. He earned the benefits also. That is, the benefits which he still has after being treated like crap by the Obama administration.
In closing, you know where you can stick your 'race card'.
You call 7.8% unemployment good news? Sure the unemployment rate went down a little. But remember that we are entering the holiday season and the stores are beginning to bring in their seasonal tempory help. Also, as mentioned in the article, the numbers not add up. Expect and adjustment in the next week or so. Obama has had 4 years to get the economy turned around, and all he could muster is just a few fractions of a percentage point! I wouldn't call that good news. I'd say we are still in trouble economically. Especially if Obama continues to insist on raising taxes! You liberals just don't get it. You can't seem to think on your own. You are like puppets and only believe what other liberals say.
All you Obama supporters, please consider this. Companies like Walmart are adding employees for the holiday period so I hope for America's sake that the jobs that were added are permanent jobs. And Obama's plan to cut defense spending, not a good plan if you want to boost employment. The big three Defense Contractors employ over 480,000 people in the US, not to mention all the US based subcontractors who supply them parts and services.
Dems are dancing in streets.......for 7.8% unemployment? This would hysterical if were not so sad.
Bottom line is that everyone knows the rate is bogus. You do too. It doesn't mask the fact that you have a president that really is in way over his head hanging on a ideology that's failed time and time again. Just admit it - you'll feel better.
Newt Gingrich is goofy at times but occasionally he swings and nails it. He recently explained our current unemployment algorithm....
"It won't be long now before you have 3% unemployment and no one working".
Pretty much nails it.
@Not Your ATM
"I'll believe the numbers when they approach millions of jobs created, anything less is just a fluctuation."
Actually, ATM, if you weren't so easily duped and manipulated by Faux "News", you would know that the economy has ADDED over 5 million new jobs over the course of the past 31 months. Since you obviously watch ONLY Faux "News" I am sure you are unaware that there have been more jobs created in just over three and a half years under President Obama than were created in eight years under DUH-bya. In fact, there are now MORE people working than there was on the day President Obama was inaugurated.
Please consider turning OFF your TV or at least changing the channel. I fear that you are going to OD on the kool-aid they are serving up over on Fox.
Your choice to be relying on the VA
olebud3,
You can regurgitate all the liberal name calling and insults all you want. If you think you know all those things about me, then your ESP is defective. But I know you are a troll and it means nothing.
Nice try.
Key2joy--That is so freakin stupid. I have read that comment so many times and it is nothing but stupid!!
Stop Watching Fox New....admit you hate Obama
No Edward, I WON'T stop watching Fox News. How about YOU stop watching NBC, ABC & CNN, all of which don't even try to pretend anymore that they are legitimate news outlets. They make it quite clear that they have a far left agenda and are in Obama's pocket. Liberals HATE the truth the way cockroaches hate the light.
And yes, I DO hate Obama. I loathe him. He's a bald-faced liar, he has no understanding of the needs of business and couldn't care less, he's buried the country in a mind-boggling amount of debt, he's corrupt, fraudulent and a downright criminal who has nothing but contempt for our Constitution, cares more about illegals than American citizens, is a radical Islam butt-kissing racist who has thrown Israel under the bus (which is BEYOND stupid), and I think he's an arrogant, self-absorbed worthless piece of crap who HATES this country and everything it stands for and he has no business being in the White House.
Edward, I don't watch Fox News. But, I will admit I hate Obama.
Not everyone who dislikes Obama is a Fox News devotee. I completely disagree with how he handled his 4 years as President, and have no interest in another 4 years.
I do not trust Obama. He pretends he supports the middle class...but he raised my taxes due to Obamacare- and I am NOT a 1%er. He acts like he supports the middle class...but hits us with new taxes too. Cannot stand this two faced liar.
@NotYourATM
First of all, you clearly don't know what the word "TROLL" means. Second, and MOST IMPORTANT, I notice that you don't dispute what I said. Probably because you know if you do a little research that doesn't involve Faux "News", Hannity, Rush, etc. you CAN'T dispute it. Typical republiCLOWN reaction --- "WAH, WAH. I don't like being presented with facts I can't refute. WAH, WAH. If I don't like the facts, I don't want to hear them. WAH, WAH. You're calling me names."
Well, boo-frickin-hoo. GROW UP!
@ olebud3 ....Isn't your reaction considered typical of an Obama supporter and shouldn't you grow up too...your wah wah wah reactory comments brings to mind a 6 year old boy who is making fun of others simply because he doesn't know any better.

Akin and his legitimate rape stuff are part of the republicon party platform. Informed women know this. That is why 44% of Obama's money is coming from women.
Did you know that last month the Democrat party raised $10 Million? Did you know that 80% of it was in donations of $50 or less? The 47%ers are voting with our wallets.
